Most (not all) MTB chainrings have a BCD (bolt centre diameter) of 104mm. I know that some 2x10 cranks differ from that.

divernick Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 On a 2x crank, pick the inner or outer chainring position that will give the best chainline. Anything between 31 and 39 tooth chainrings will work, depending on your rear cog selection. Most guys on a 26'er run 32x16 and on a 29'er run a 32x20. I run a 38 x 20 on my 26'er
RossW Posted May 25, 2012 Posted May 25, 2012 I know it's a case of each to their own but do you think it's a feasible idea to stick with the 39t in front and use a higher toothed cog in the rear, like a 22 etc. Depending on the tooth options available? Don't really want to have to shell some Rand on a new chain ring when I could make do with what I have already.
