Guys please help me here which is is best.please tell me why you like the group set.

Slx - ok

Xt - great

Xtr - best

 

That's pretty much it!

 

It's all budget dependent. If you run SLX you'll be fine. Decent mid-range groupset that won't let you down.

Ok ok sram is not bad, just not as good as shimano on a mtb.

I agree with the above in terms of quality and pecking order, BUT:

1. SLX - Great value for money - crank weighs only slightly more than XT (40g?) at a lot less Rands, but rumoured to be stiffer than XT.

SLX is the old LX and they were the bomb back in the day. :clap:

2. As complete group I would go for XT because of reliability and pricing as opposed to XTR.

3. If you mix the group then XT der's and shifters ( maybe SLX) and definately SLX crank to save a few bucks.

4. XTR does not feature in my frame of reference due to price. I think you get little more than a few grams for gain as opposed to XT for a lot

more RRRRR. Performance is virtually the same as XT.

 

Then again.......it all depends on your budget and how much you would like to spend. All of the above will do the job well.

Please don't let anyone make you imagine that there is anything much more than weight and serious bling between today's SHIMANO groupsets.

 

It's not like years ago where there was massive differences between them, at the cost of production and efficiency, many parts are exactly the same except for the finish/material being used.

 

If you look at the 2012 deore, slx, xt and xtr you will see it evident in many parts such as brakeset's, shifters, mech's, etc etc.

 

If you are starting off, there is nothing wrong with a bit of a mix and match, for example, my "dream recipe" for a beginner who want's a great SHIMANO groupset would be:

 

Deore M596 2012 Brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

SLX Front Mech

Deore M591 Shifters

 

 

Then, if you want something a bit more blingy:

 

 

SLX 2012 Brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

SLX Front Mech

SLX Shifters

 

If you want something with street cred:

 

XT 2012 Brakeset, i-Tech Rotors

XT i-Spec Shifters mounted to brakeset

SLX Chainset

XT Rear Mech

XT Front Mech

 

If you want almost racer/sponsored, flashy

 

XT 2012 Brakeset, i-Tech Rotors

XT i-Spec Shifters mounted to brakeset

XTR Chainset

XTR Rear Mech

XT Front Mech

 

If you have loads of cash full XTR.

SRAM great as 9 speed but just not as good as Shimano in 10 speed especially at the top end. Was proven at his years Epic!

must say I agree.SLX seems great value for money but I realy feel the diffs in XTR shifters and XTR rear derailer. Brakes, go with cheap. I would build groupset as follow.

 

Crank SLX

Casette XT

Brakes Deore

Shifters XTR (if you can afford) - love the way you can upshift multiples in one push

Front Derailer XT (only like R50 more than SLX and R100 more than Deore)

Rear Derailer XT is good enough but would slap XTR if you can afford. Crappiest cassette with XTR shifters and XTR rear derailer shifts smooth as butter...

?= XX

 

Shimano has yet to catch up :-)

 

x7 looks more like Deore for me ;)
