when and if you decide to take the cleats off ie clean them adjust them put new ones in , do make sure that you affix them the right side forward.ask my friend who told me that these new cleats are very difficult to get into the pedals one morning.when we stopped in jonkershoek halfway into the route he tried to unclip.ended up like a tortoise on his back still attached to the bike.after a few minutes of wriggling around, still attached to the pedals,we decided to take off his shoes.after hammering with a rock the one shoe came off and there was the problem.time pedals with the new cleat the wrong way round.was still fun. short answer will be set the tension low in the beginning and tighten as you become more proficient at clipping unclipping.it becomes a natural movement after a while.

Thanks......I am a old Tannie that decided to start cycling. Tried it in my lounge last nignt and nearly destroyed the fish tank.

I don't want to laugh at your expense but any chance there was a webcam there to capture the moment. That sounds bloody funny

I would love to see the seen myself. I was hanging between the fish tank and a box off files. Shouting for help .....my hubby did not think it was that serious........untill he realized the fishtank was nearly off the stand.......Could be a winning sene on candid camera

I have been using cleats for years. Never did I fall over at a stop street or when some lesser mortal stopped to push a rideable section right in front of me. Then one day in the starting chute I bliksemed over. Two hundred other people enjoyed.

Twist and then lift. Don't apply any upward pressure wile disengaging the cleat.

Unclip first, then tip the bike over.

Normally with clipless pedals we first stop riding, start tilting and then stick a foot out to stop falling. Now first stick out a foot, then stop riding (no falling/tilting required!)

I found Crank Brothers Eggbeater/Candy pedals are easier to unclip than Shimano style ones, even with the Shimano ones on the weakest setting. Unfortunately everybody falls over once or twice in the beginning.

Candies ROCK! Far better than SHimano and far easier to use. Well worth teh money!

Sooo...how did the spinning go??

Not bad. I went 30 minutes early and was just clipping in and out. You can defnitely do the sprinting part much harder. What I do need is shoes that will do the work for me....still think I might have a heart atack every nignt..

One thing I can say..........I feel much better now, Knowing that I am not the only one struggling. My hubby didn't try his shoes on his bike yet......only the spinning part and he is doing a race this weekend. The first thing I am taking is the video camera.........

I think someone needs to show me how to do this properly before I attempt it on my own again....lol

when clipping in or out do it with your pedal in the 6 o'clock position. aka pointing towards the ground. This way you can put a bit of weight on it to stabilise things. clipping in is a straight forward motion, feel for the pedal and push down and forward until you hear the click.

when unclipping, again rotate the pedal towards the ground, add a bit of weight to keep it in place and then and twist your heel sideways (not up or down, just towards the side) until the pedal disengages. if you feel you have to twist too much then adjust the tensioner to loosen the pedal.

It helps a lot if your shoes and pedals allow you to still pedal fairly easily while clipped out. That way you can unclip and continue pedalling if you feel unsafe or nervous.

Like other have said, unclip both feet BEFORE you stop moving. then you want have any embarrassing slow motion falls :)
