I have a 26inch Merida team 96 Carbon. I am a lady and only 160cm in height. I can"t afford a 29er or a new 27.5inch bike. Apparently you can put 27,5 inch wheels on to your 26inch frame. Does anyone have advice as to wether or not I should do this and why? My merida is a few years old so I don't think it falls under the warranty. Apparently if I try sell my merida i"ll get nothing for it as it's a 26inch. Its got all the best components (i bought it second hand from a pro). Much appreciated :)

Hi

i also recently enquired about this.

its a costly affair only suitable rims are American Classics retail for R6500 ex vat

Tyres and tubeless conversion ranges from R1200 till R 1500

you also need to change your Fork to the Fox fork cos only a Fox fork will work on the 27,5 tires.

total costs will be in the region of R 10,000.00 plus

Thats what my LBS told me last week.

Hi and welcome to the hub, You can indeed put 650B wheels onto a 26", whether your particular Merida will work is another story, your best bet would be to take it too your LBS(local bike store) and get them to check for you, certain forks will work(mostly Fox forks are OK), thats not to say others would not.

Do a search, there are a few 650B threads about.

The fork can handle the 650B , but you need to check the back end of your frame. Is there enough space for a larger diameter wheel.

Especially with Dualies .

American Classiscs are going for R5500 incl vat at my mechanics shop, other forks can work, although the clearence will be tight. To build up a set of Stans will set you back about R6000

Some bikes can be "converted". Just consider that your stand over height, BB height will be increased. Also consider that 650b tires are not always easy to come by. Your mud clearance will be less. And if you have a Reba/Sid, you will need a new fork. You can get Crest rims for around R1000 apiece.

The big question: Why?

One thing to keep in mind is the availability of spares, specifically rims and tyres. If you bust either and don't have stock in the garage, you're unlikely to find a replacement at the LBS and will probably have to wait for delivery.

Talk to Jared at Morningside Cycles 011807 8495 he has done it to a Yeti. Only some bikes and forks will work but they will advise you better.

Why not?

The increase is 12mm in height, how much that makes a difference is yet to be determined.

I was also considering this but I was told NOT ADVISABLE!

What was the reason?

My mate took his carbon 2011 XTC and they didn't fit, but they fit my XTC frame, he is so gutted.
