its the freewheel that makes the difference, you'd probably have to go with another brand of hub and have the wheel rebuilt if your wanting a louder ratchet sound

You want loud , change the hubs. Hope , Chris king .............. it's the only way .

Shimano hubs get quieter as they get older .

Hub change is the only option here. Shimano have always made there hubs to be of a relatively low decibel output. Still great stuff. Some loud hub options.... Definitely Hope if you want something to be heard (Pro 2 Evo is slightly quieter than the Pro 2). Dt and Chris King are a bit quieter(higher pitch, but still a great sound.) Hope and Chris King being the more reliable options here.

There are other brands too, but I've seen alot of failed free-bodies out at events....

Mine has hubs I would like to make softer........... strange world.

I get wanting louder or quieter hubs to scare or surprise dog walkers and small children. But softer hubs??? :P

I quite like the sound of my XT hubs. They sound subtle and expensive. :D

Fulcrum hubs are the same. Just a gentle purring. The Hopes are awesome though. I especially enjoy the way they get people to move over on singletrack without you having to say anything.

Exactly why we love 'em.

I could listen to my hubs buzzing all day - because that would mean:

a. I am descending.

b. At speed.

c. Probably in the Alps somewhere.

Nothing scares a walker more than the unseen silent rider flying past them :P
