Also - wouldn't R15k buy you a Santa Cruz Superlight or Blur?

I would like a superlight but don't they go for more than 20 grand

Yeah I think I got that a bit wrong, I think the Blur goes for about R15K (don't quote me on that though).

Have a look at this site, it may help: http://www.bicycling.co.za/bbg/

R 12k would buy you the Superlight FRAME only! The Blur frame is probably closer to R 15k

I recently went through same exercise. Best is to find out what you want to do, and where you want to ride and with whom. Be specific and be honest with yourself and you'll find the best bike for you.

A bobbing Trance is a badly set up Trance.

Roadies love the Anthem because it has a stiff feel to it. It reminds them of their road bikes, only with a little give.

The Trance is a trail bike and it has a much more active suspension. More care is needed to set it up to be Bob free.

First decide what kind of riding you want to do on the bike. Then choose the machine to match that. You can't do everything on a XC race bike cos it's too stretched out. It's ok for marathon's and xc races but it becomes an uncomfortable beast after 4-5 hrs in the saddle.

The Commenzal Meta 4 is an awesome trail/marathon bike. Also more active than a Anthem.

If you decide on Anthem then look at;

Cannondale Scalpel II Team, 1,2,3 (carbon) or 4,5 (aluminium)

Specialized Epic

Titus Racer X 80

Trek Fuel

If Marathon or Trail riding is what you after then

Giant TRance

Commenzal Meta 4

Cannondale Rush

Ibis Mojo

Titus Motolite

Gary Fisher HiFi

Trek Fuel EX

Soon to be released Morewood marathon bike

will all be awesome bikes.

Just a small correction.

The meta 4 is more suited with its four inches of travel to XC, Sani to sea or epic type of races. The relaxed head angle makes it a great handling bike. It is a bike that you can ride on all day. Very forgiving on the body.

The Meta 5.5 on the other hand is more suited for trail riding. It is however a very versatile bike, that climbs very well with a lot of traction. It is suitable for someone who wants a bike that he can race on (This is not for race snakes), but that he can also take down some serious technical stuff, including taking a few jumps. It is a lot of fun, basically.Big%20smile

What size are you looking at,

I have an Anthem 1 in small,

and a cannondale prophet medium for sale.

The prophet has 140mm travel front and back, but honestly climbs like it has a lot less, both in the R13k range

Which Prophet is that? Year? Spec?

If we were living in Europe were the trails are quite technical then I would agree with you. However is SA few trails are actually technical enough to relegate a Meta 4 to pure marathon race bike status. it has the same laid back geometry as the Meta 5. The 5 just has longer legs.

Categorising a bike in XC race, marathon, trail etc has a lot more to do with headangle /wheelbase, bb height than just the suspension travel.

Meta 4 and 5 are both trail bikes although their cross over is different.

Meta 4 crosses over in to XC race/ Marathon while Meta5 crosses over inot Free ride light. They are both Trail bikes due to their geometry.
