Hi Guys,

I have just bought my first set of MTB shoes and have Shimano m520 pedals. How tight shoughd the release screw setting be? I have it at it's loosest at the moment?

Sorry I am not so clued up with the technical terms yet - please could someone help!

that is where you want them, or at least for now

If on the loosest, then you must be careful that they dont clip out while riding. It can/will happen.

I would quickly take it to 2-3 clicks up................

Leave them loose and ride around on grass (or somewhere to fall over) and practice unclipping. Once you're confident then start tighting them up.

I disagree. I ride with mine on the "loosest" setting and they never unclip, not when I fly over technical rock gardens or when I do jumps, never. They only unclip when I turn my feet and that does not happen by accident whilst I am riding. I ride with mine as loose as possible for the added play. Some people prefer les play and therefore tighten them. They are made to only unclip with certain movements, and tightening/loosening should not play a role in the way that they unclip.

Sure, they will unclip easier on a loose setting if you are prone to twisting your feet into unnatural positions whilst riding. This is human error though and not a pedal fault.

I would leave them where they are for now. As your cleats wear a bit it will be easier to clip in and out. As you gain more confidence, tighten them up half a turn at a time until you feel comfortable.

To unclip I am just twisting my heels outward? Seem to get them out fairly easy - silly question but is this how it is done?

I am on my second pair and have never actually changed the settings. If your feet remain pretty still when cycling there should be no problems. I have not had mine unclip unless I flicked my heel in/out. I think many years of horse riding helped me here, heels down and toes straight!

The difficulty comes when you need to unclip in a difficult situation and you try lifting your foot instead of twisting it and over you go then. Takes time and practice and it's really not that bad falling over (only slightly embarrassing) but when you're 3 hours into a ride that won't be a concern.
