My thinking is that for a front tyre the NN has a bit more aggressive tread pattern? But do agree on point 3 - snakeskin is a necessity.

It is normal practise to do it that way, but I have found that the RR sideknobs actually grips pretty well when cornering(better than a MK imo) but retains its fast rolling attributes and its flippen light + always available from anywhere in snakeskin...dare I say its best all round tyres

The NN front and RR rear is a very popular combo both locally and overseas. I changed from RR all round to this combo and found the NN to offer more feel in terms of grip levels, and to be more forgiving in a wide range of trail conditions. Put simply the NN is close to the RR on dry hard pack, but for me if I encounter wet/muddy/variable conditions it outperforms the RR. Running both in Snakeskin is essential.

Considering this combo. Have you been running it long? What's your opinion so far?

I put them on in feb and did the Route 69 .Magalies monster .Groenkloof dozens of times .nissan trailseeker races and a lot more .They are light .Grip well .Roll well ,and strong .Not one puncture so far and i can remove and assemble them on a mavic rim .The guys at epic shop suggested them for the epic riders too .Team 360 at epic used this combo i think .I have crossmark tyres on another bike so i know them but will rather trust the contis for CPT

You see, you had me right up to 'Team 360 at epic used this combo'. They got pomped at Epic!!!

Definitely not NobblyNicks for stage racing too heavy and too slow rolling.

For a dually I prefer the Ritchey WCS Shield on the rear, it is lighter than a Ralph SS and rolls just as fast/or faster. It wears out just as fast as a Ralph. On the front there are 2 options, Ralph or Ikon. Been using the Ikon as a front for long now and the grip is extremely good. The Ikon outlast most tyres by far wear wise and is lighter than a Ralph SS, but the Ralph just rolls a slight bit faster. If money is an issue I would just run the Ikon front and rear. For a dually I can highly recommend the Ikon Exo front with Ritchey WCS rear. My Ikon on the front is there for a year now and still looks fine, while at the rear my 2nd Ritchey is just about done, in the same year.

Conti tyres tend to be heavier and weaker. I would not take those weak sidewall X-kings near my bike. Team 360 Life used Ikon Exo front and back for the Epic.

....

Rouxtjie - I just checked the easybike prices on RR...wow its cheap! Is there a catch? Old stock?

Nope no catch...latest model RR..great service from them everytime

45 grammes difference between NN and RR. NN get's 6 stars for grip on Schwalbe website vs 4 for RR. Speed NN get's 4 stars and RR 5 stars.

Following your logic you'd be better off running the Rocket Ron's all round - low rolling resistance and light?

Agreed - I bought some nice whitewall RR for my single speed from them. Great service and great price.

I was wrong as rouxtjie pointed out .They used ikons and that cost them the race .RR snakeskin is also good choice , but i have seen how much abuse these contis can take even if the sidewalls are thin ,it is very tough to penetrate .Saguaro,s are strong and will work for a back tyre ,but they are too heavy for a front 29er tyre .Saguaro back and conti race king in front can work.Bruce reyneke and the other club members used saguaro ,s for the epic Edited by Blitzer

I also did, but on a 26er. I think the weight penalty on running a heavy tire is much worse on a 29er. Mostly for that reason I won't put them on my 29er.
