I have spent the last three weeks riding Northern Farm because it is so close to home. But I am looking for something different this Sunday morning. I want to do about 40km seeing as I am doing the next trailseeker at Van Gaalen. I have identified a few options so far:

1. Van Gaalen

2. Thaba Trails

3. Modderfontein

4. Groenkloof

I haven't been to any of the above places yet so some insight into the conditions of each would be appreciated.

Groenkloof is quite nice. There's a wide variety of trails you can ride there based on how technical you want to go. Lots and lots of rocks and some nice singletrack and jeeptrack to ride. The best advice I can give is to check out the Youtube videos on Groenkloof.

The others I haven't ridden yet.

I ride groenies and voortrekker monument together. groenies flows nicely, voortrekker will give you a good workout its quite technical with lots of short climbs.

1. Van Gaalen - I have not seen enough to give much detail. But from the 20km I have done there its good fun!

2. Thaba Trails - Havnt been to thaba

3. Modderfontein - nice place that only gets better each time I go there. Not technical but you can get +/- 35km in without Doug laps of the same tails.

4. Groenkloof - nice single track with plenty rocky technical bits, I always seem to get +/- 14km out of one loop so you'll have to do a few loops. That being said you won't mind doing a few loops because its fun.

IMO:

1. Van Gaalen - Nice cross section of riding options to choose from, great single-track, BIG technical climbs and downhill’s. Various routes and distances to ride, best to ride with someone who knows the way. Good for you to see what you will be in for at the next Nissan.

2. Thaba Trails – Great trails, nice rocky technical riding, love it. (see Rietvlei)

3. Modderfontein – not too technical reasonably flat and uncomplicated, similar to NF with some very bumpy single track. The HT guys not like this much.

4. Groenkloof – Always good to ride with the wildlife, good trails.

Kings Kloof – Great technical riding from the get go. 20KM loop makes the legs feel like they have done 40 at NF.

Rietvlei – In the same area as Thaba, similar riding options from easy to some nice technical stuff.

Breedts Nek – open district road with a big climb at 25km up and over, and back.

MTN Bike Park- purpose built crass section of easy, moderate, experienced and technical trails.

So I ended up doing oom Piet, the river, and what I think is kasaan ( I thought it was the Greek church route at the time) I also spent about 10km's getting hopelessly lost, and ran out of skills once or twice :-) All in all a great day out, some of that single track is truly amazing, I will definitely be going back soon but maybe this time I will go with someone who knows the place
