Will the 650B wheels be a disadvantage when it gets windy?

 

yup! As described in 2008 (Semenuk I think said it), the wheels act like giant sails. So when it gets windy, 26" sails are bad enough!

 

When it comes to "rolling over stuff" 29" is actuallt only 1.5" increase (in radius) over 26" and 650B would only be 0.75" increase...

 

but when it comes to surface area.

 

29" = 661 in2

27.5" = 594 in2

26" = 530 in2

 

So when it comes to wind resistance,

 

a 29er has approx 25% more wind resistance than a 26"

a 650b has approx 12% more wind resistance than a 26"

 

and that's not even considering the extra gyroscopic forces that larger wheels produce.

 

So now you know why there aren't 29" dirt jump bikes!

Saw same thing in Trans Baviaans when crossing rivers while riding. The water force nearly pushes the bike out from under you on a 29er, there is more rubber for the water to push against compared to a 26er...

yup!

 

and despite a wheel being more air than spoke, when it is rotating it becomes almost solid. For those that don't believe me... spin your wheel and try quickly put your finger between the spokes and pull it back again without touching anything.

 

So yeah, it's not only the bigger surface area of the rubber that is affected by the wind/water, but basically the entire wheel.

Not sure where you got your intel from but someone is telling porky pies.

 

The legendary Sheldon Brown has this to say:

 

26 diam = 559mm

650b diam = 584mm

29 diam = 622mm

 

650b is 25mm or 1" bigger than 26" wheel - 0.5" in radius.

 

Edit: on a different subject - personally I think 650A would have been a better size to adpot than 650B - at least it's closer to halfway between than 1/3...

Let the primary school edumacation continue....when passing through water wheels are not spinning - relative to the ground they are stationary so the "sail" concept does not hold *ahem* water for when wheels move through water.

I just took the diameters at "face value" to give a basic illustration of surface area increase proportinal to diameter increase.

 

I'm too lazy for exact science :lol:
