Maxxis Ikon 29er ECX/3C/EXO - are they Tubeless????

Hi,

Just want to know if the Maxxis Ikon 29'er ECX/3C/EXO are tubeless. Most of the Maxxis Tubeless tyres have the UST branding on them but these don't.

Does anyone run these sans tubes and have you had any problems????

29er and tubeless do not work well together because of weight, so be glad that its not tubeless. The Ikon Exo is not tubeless but do they work well in tubeless set up? Yes they do work very well.

Please explain this to me?

Tubeless tires weigh about 300g more than tubeless ready tires, so if you don't have the legs like me, ride tubeless ready

What I meant is UST and 29er dont go well together because of weight. I think the op refers to UST and tubeless as the same thing, but they are not. You basically get 3 types: non-tubeless, tubeless-ready, and UST, all of which can be used tubeless. The Ikon is on the same level as tubeless ready and is therefor much lighter than UST, and they also are very solid set up tubeless.

Please elaborate

UST = heavy tyres because of very thick sidewall and bead. Maxxis Crossmark UST 2.1 29er = 835g. Maxxis Ikon Exo 2.2 with sidewall protection = 575g. Thats a hefty 260g rotational weight per wheel. To me that is an unacceptable weight penalty. The UST is stronger, but the Exo is also strong enough.

So why do you ride the heavier version of the CREST rims in white? Note that the black ones are lighter.

My Icons weigh 600, 605, 603 and 606 grams apiece.

anybody tried running the EXC/3C version tubeless? (ie not the EXC/3C/EXO) I'm fairly light on tires (probably tempting fate - but no sidewall damage in the last 2 years riding rocky trails)

I ride the black CREST rims, my white CREST! wheelset is still new and will be sold. The diff between the black and white CREST rim is only 30g.

Real tyres weights are usually a bit more than stated weights.

I used to only use UST tyres on my 26er since I never got far with foldables and rocks slicing the sidewalls. Now I have the Ikons on the 29er and no problems for almost a year of riding.
