We arrived at the start, the gun went. Then after about 5 minutes we started moving. Massed start with only a few guys seeded at the front.

No music, no fanfare.

My neigbour (a total non cyclist) rode that very first one as a standard 8 kid. He did no training, finished it and never cycled again until this very day. He says he had no idea that it was the start of something great that would endure for over 3 decades, he just remember suffering horribly.

Any of you receive this email....I was 10yrs old at the time (1978)

"Do you remember when you rode The Argus, as it was known then, on a Saturday; finished at the Camps Bay Sports Club on Beach Road; posted your entry form and copies of your previous certificates if you wanted to start earlier, and, if you did wear a ‘helmet’, it looked a lot like a bunch of bananas? Well, if you do, we would love you to share those memories with us.

The Cape Argus Pick n Pay Cycle Tour will be 37 years old this year which means we will celebrate our 40th birthday in 2017. In the build-up to this, we intend featuring photographs, memorabilia and items of interest pertaining to the four decades of the Tour.

And this is where you come in. If you participated during the years 1978-1987 and we hope you will be able to provide us with interesting anecdotes, photographs and memorabilia, if you have any.

We would also appreciate it if you could ask any friends and colleagues who you know rode the Tour in those early years but have stopped cycling and are not likely to be on our database to assist".
