The drink warming up in the bottle does have a lot to do with it. I switched to Camebak's podium chill bottles before last year's Pioneer and with a few ice cubes in my bottle I don't have any "off" taste. I also rinse my bottles with Milton to kill any bacteria the dish washer didn't get. Areas that are prone to bacteria forming is the drinking nozzle, so take extra care here.

I also use the FiT Carbo Supreme, works for me and mix it before I leave for a race. Taste is pretty ok - find I dont need Goo and other stuff when I ride on this. have tried many others and this seems to do the trick. However - by the time I get home and wash my bottles etc - the smell does make my eyes water (but then its been in the sun for a while) . The taste also changes during the ride (especially if its hot) but I am thirsty so drink it and wash it down with normal water. will try ice cubes and maybe freezing half the bottle so it stays chilled longer. Cant imagine anything not changing taste when you are out there in the sun for 3 hours plus....

Hi all

I am curios to know if there is anyone else out there that can tell me if they experience a change in the taste of their energy drinks, while doing long rides.

One example is PVM, I used it for about a year, did the Trans Baviaans with it as well as the Wines 2 Whales last year. One thing that always bugged me was that while doing long rides, it did not taste so nice anymore, I am talking 4 hour plus rides year. Reading some posts previously, it was suggested once that because it is more natural, no preservatives, that sort of thing will happen. I sort of accepted it at the time and thought, well, that is the healthy choice. This year I started looking around again, and decided to try Enduren. After speaking to the suppliers, they told me that there will be no change in taste, and it is very natural. I went out a bout a tub, used it for the last month, and, true to form, no change in taste.

On Friday it was time to stock up again, and I decided I will try Cadence, something I used in the past, but then shifted to PVM. I did my first long ride with Cadence on Satruday and, again, after 2.5 hours of riding, started using the second bottle, and there we go, we had a little offish taste. By the time I got home, I literally could not stomach it, even for a little recovery drink. I questioned this today, and it was suggested that it could be the fact that it tastes differently when cold vs when war, or, that the detergent in my water bottle changed the taste of the drink.

I do not want to go on a witch hunt with the manufacturers, but I would like to know if I am the only that experience this sort of problem, because then I need to rectify it and clean my bottles better, or something.

Could you guys please comment.

used to use pvm about 6-7 years ago and i do agree!!! not only did the tase go from whatever flavor i had to a milky-ish semi sweet slush but it changed colour from lets say green for lime to a grayish brown EVERY time!!!! summer rides "frotted" much faster!!! using HEED now, tastes like water with only a hint of flavour in the aftertaste..

So, the reason energy drinks change in taste is if they have "whey protein peptides" in the mixture. It happens due to the change in temperature and also because the bottle are closed and the volatile compounds cannot escape.

So, although the taste change, it will still be safe to drink and do it's job, it just doesn't taste as good anymore.

This is the best explanation I have heard, from the product developer at PVM. Kudos for not "lying" about the fact that the taste change and that she explained it properly on why it happens.

I’ve been 32GI since it came out. I’ve now found something that costs far less and IMO works much better for me. You will find my recipe here: https://community.bikehub.co.za/topic/120535-maltodextrin/page__hl__maltod

Note this this is not the original recipe but one I got to after playing around with the ingredient ratios. I’ve not tested this stuff on various training rides and races. This included a double Breeds Nek ride, 12 hour race, loads of lactate threshold sets, hill repeats etc. I also used it at the BestMed race this past Saturday. My conclusion, no more 32GI for me thanks

GU berry powder (electrolytes for training) and GU Carbohydrate Tropical Fruit for racing - very mild flavour, not that sweet at all and doesnt change flavour. Not sure if its hardcore enough for you riders though but suits me fine as a weekend warrior and middle of the field rider. Also freeze the inside of your camelback and water bottle tops to avoid bacteria and mould build up between rides. Works like a charm.
