Anyone have any experience with time lapse? I'm doing a bit of research on it, and setting up some kit to do an extended (3 to 4 week) time lapse of a project we are busy with.

Tips, tricks and things to avoid will be greatly appreciated.

I played around with this a little some years ago using a Nikon D200. It has a feature that allows you to set how often the shutter is fired and for how many frames. Did a few shoots of several hundred frames over a couple of hours. Put them together with some freeware software that worked well. Can't remebr the name of the software.

You are limited by the size of the CF card and battery life.

Battery life is the major hurdle with this method.

There is a power supply available for the D200 to get around this. Google will help you here.

A second hand D200 will cost next to nothing so may be an option. There are probably newer DSLR's with this feature too.

Also google " intervalometer " to learn more.

Hope this helps.

we did one of a building be built next to our office block a few years back. Sommer used a webcam and set it to take a photo every hour or 30 min (cant remember). did a test over 2 days to see if there was an sun problems etc and then left it ot its own devices. 5 months later we had quite a lekker little time lapse video

clever. i know the guys also use HD cctv cams the same way. ever lasting power supply(dependant on where you are) they water proof, good footage and runs off a hard drive. so you can pretty much convert in to a image etc. But if you prefer using the old fasioned camera then sure. alot if not most of the astro guys still do it this way. what app you using it for?

A GoPro can do timelapse, the problem comes in with the battery life (sure there are AC adapters that would get around this) and card space

I'm setting up a GoPro, modifying the case to allow me to plug power into it. Found a place in the US that does a card that turns the GoPro on and off at set intervals to extend battery life, but shipping costs are horrendous. Coupled with a solar charger, would be ideal.

Going to do a fixed position for the duration of the project, and a second camera that we will change the position on a regular basis.

On the fixed cam, will shoot an image every 60 seconds (max interval on the GoPro).

Buy yourself a skeleton case, saves you destroying your one.

Keen on doing something like this on the Nikon D90, hmm need to go and do some reading.

but a web cam on a computer might be the easiest by far. sure there is some software out there. but then your purpose build camera's might have better settings/control over the shot.

would be interesting, report back on what your choices were and what your deiced.

The skeleton case is not weather proof enough for my needs. The kit will be fairly exposed. At R395 a case though, I can pick up a spare or 2.
