Hey guys

I'm getting a new mountain bike, a SCOTT Scale 920 Bike. It has a mix of XT and SLX

http://www.scott-sports.com/global/en/products/227710009/bike-scale-920-xl/ that's the link to see the bikes components.

My question is - IS 2X10 better than 3X10 ? I'm still a young guy (17) and do a lot of racing. the bike comes out with 3X10. Is it worth while in selling the group set and buying a new a 2X10 rather.

Does anyone know what i will get for the group set ?

I'm taking part in the UCI 2013 world masters and thinking that 2X10 will be better.

Any thoughts and opinions on this topic ?

What shifters does it have on? XT there is a switch on the shifter between 3/2blade, don't know about SLX. You just need another crank. LBS swopped my brothers crank for free, ask them if they wil do it too.

a 3x10 setup will more than likely run a 11-34 cassette. Most double chainring setups will run a 11-36 cassette, so it'll be at least a crank and cassette change.

Personally I prefer the 2X10 and one gets accustomed to it quickly in any case. Have you considered asking your LBS what the trade-in difference would be if any?

Thanks, i will ask them today.

Good question. I know you can move up into senior if you want, from 18 or something, but Masters is a bit out there for 17 tongue.png

i will be 18 before the race, so maybe that could work.

How do you get to race in the Master's at age 17?

I checked it out last night,

"In addition, South Africa will also play host to the UCI MTB Masters World Championships, scheduled a week prior to the elite event from 21st to 25th August 2013, an event open to all non-elite XCO and DHI participants."

The SLX shifters can do double or triple mode, so its just the crank you need to swap.

According to the spec sheet, the bike is supplied with an 11-36 cassette.

There have been several 2x10 vs 3x10 debates wrt 29'ers here on The Hub. Do a search, wade through the arguments for and against, play with a gear table and compare it to your current bike's gearing and make up your own mind.

Personally, I really like my 2x10 setup, but switched the 26t ring for a 24t. I need all the help I can get on the climbs...

11-36 on a triple... spin, spin, spin....
