SRAM Freewheel Body Issue

Recommended Posts

I had a new wheel built with a SRAM rear hub in April, now I'm told that the freewheel has worn and needs to be replaced.

Can anyone tell me if the freewheel body should wear out so quickly or if it was faulty and what recourse I have? I have the bike washed and lubed after almost every ride so I have maintained it. I ride about twice a week, one mid week training ride and a race on the weekend. +- 50km a week during peak season.

The LBS won't replace it and the distributors won't replace it under warranty because it's a moving part.

Should I just suck it up and take it as wear and tear or do I have reason to chase it?

Is it a mtb or road bike? Either way, a freewheel shouldn't wear out so quickly. Maybe with all the dirt of mtbing they could have an argument, but even so...........

My new bike has SRAM hubs but on my GT I have gone through 4 or 5 freewheel bodies ( Shimano M475's) over 14,000km of riding.

I keep my bike clean but do not use a hose and repack the wheel bearings regularly so who knows!

I am hoping the SRAM body lasts a bit better than Shimano!
