MTB Tandem

Hi guys

I'm looking to get a MTB tandem to do some cycling with my dad.

Does anyone have some experience and advice on if it’s worth it, as well as if there are MTB tandems that do not cost R50 000?

Thanks

Hi!

I've got a MTB tandem and ride with my wife. It's great fun and allows us to cycle together which we'd battle to do if we were on separate bikes. It all depends on the reason why you want to do it and the trust how much the person on the back trusts you.

I've got one of the R50 k bikes and love it but my brother has a cheaper one and has just as much fun. Again, it's the person on the back who suffers more if you go for a hardtail but you should be able to find a cheap one if you look around.

Don't go too cheap, tandems take a lot of strain with 2 people over rough ground. A broken fork or frame at pace is no fun at all. I've tried it.

Best bet would be to contact eccentric1, although he'll most likely arrive shortly anyway... he's had a fair amount of experience with tandems.

+1 - Chat with the Oom, will no doubt be able to advise you on the Toyota's of tandems, as opposed to the R50k jobbies...

Ventana el Conquistador de Montana with electric sex welding are the best. One day when I grow up I will have one.

On a MTB tandem make sure of the following:-

A front suspension fork with a steel steerer.

At least 180 mm disk rotors.

A Cane Creek rear seat-post for the stoker if it is a hardtail.

Raleigh had a Tandem with a hardtail frame. Our MTB Tandem is Omega Venturo. Only a few frames were brought into the country. Both frames were made by Kinesis and are quite strong.

I have the Raleigh tandem, and have put it through plenty of difficult terrain and been fine, LT thudbuster on the stoker seat.

Unless your partner is very keen you will most likely do less technical riding, and for this, the Raleigh has been fine.

I'd love a beautiful Ventana, but the cost just hasn't been justified by the amount of riding. As Eccentric1 said , you can use the Raleigh frame , respray it if you want and upgrade the components if needed ( came with SLX groupset, Magura Julie brakes, Rockshox Recon fork, all pretty robust stuff)

Does anyone know if you can hire an MTB tandem for a weekend in order to try it out?

My mother in law has Parkinsons and used to ride normal MTB but cannot anymore...I have suggested we try a tandem - but to spend R15K on a basic bike is a lot if she is not going to feel comfortable/safe on the bike.

Did anybody came out with a Tandem 29er as yet?drool.gif

Yes

and we all thought 29ers couldn't handle any worse... but then they turned them into busses!

Are the rims special on a tandem, I am sitting with my old 26" full suspension XT all round but a cracked frame and would love to get a tandem frame and build it up so I can get each of my 3 daughters used to riding MTB.

Unfortunately you have to be very careful with our MTB or, any Tandem wheel set. 36 hole or 40 hole is the norm. I do have a 32 hole wheel set that we used with slicks that I built myself that is an exceptional wheel set. Our MTB wheel set is a 36 hole wheel set built on DMR Revolver hubs with Sun Ringle Mammoth rims, but then we are fairly sedate riders.

It all depends what you want to do with the Tandem and what your riding style will be. It also depends who will build your wheel set.
