That fork looks like a standard Manitou Minute. Way to flimsy for that application. Use a fork fork like Hendrik's Marzocchi 55 or even better, a 66.

+1..... the main prerequisite for a tandem fork is that it should have a steel steerer....... being a tandem rated fork also help!!!!!!!

I don't know anything about tandems.

I did however see Northcliff cycles lending a a pair of ladies a tandem to test ride some time back.

Perhaps they'll do the same for you.

You should give them a call. 011 476 2110

A very good idea. Our first Tandem was given to us to try out and we ended up buying it. Remember there are NO grey areas when Tandemming. If you are a husband /wife team it is important. There can only be two outcomes. Honeymoon or divorce court!!!!!!

I suddenly have a lot more respect for tandem riders

Rightly so.

I recall seeing a blind stoker and his captain riding the Vasbyt single track in Tokai Forest during the Epic prologue there a few years back, while others got off to walk. That's when my own respect for tandem teams really kicked in.

If the riders are compatible, riding tandem is great fun. I rode tandem with my sons until they were old enough to ride their own road bikes. Man, I really miss flying the downhills leaving everyone behind.

Bye, I'm off to check the classifieds. I'll try to rope the wife in one more time.

Thinking of using this wheelset on the tandem... Thoughts?

They may work, but are they Tandem rated. Just does not look as if they have enough spokes. 36 hole rims is the minimum. Very expensive as well..... Will cost you in exess of ZAR10,000.00. You can do so much better and still have cash avaiable.

Go and look here.

I saw a Avalance ENVI at the bike store a few days ago for a really good price. R12k ish for a MTB with a Epicon air fork, standard 29er wheels, and Tektro brakes. Gears were Alivio/Acera level. What bothered me the most was the cranks. Looked like riveted steel blades at the back. ?square taper BB.

I took a short ride on it and the shifting was pretty poor. I think one needs stronger spring'd derrailleurs for that long cables.

To 'upgrade' the bike to some decent level like SLX concerning the shifters and wheels will be easy. But what to do about the cranks?

Thanks.

This is our Ventana mtb tandem, its rock solid and we ride 80% of the tracks and single tracks that I ride on my single bike.

There were a few "communication" problems in the beginning but its sorted out now!!!
