Are 9 speed and 10 speed Shimano cranks compatible?

Recommended Posts

I just transferred my 10 speed SLX crank onto my Anthem X which is a 9 speed and it is working perfectly... the only thing that I changed on the bike was the crank.

My 9 speed crank has been swopped onto my 10 speed 29er and it is working just fine...

will a Deore crank with chainrings from a 9 spd bike work on a bike with a 10 spd drivetrain?

Yes it will work, many people have done this and it works 100%. I have helped a friend do this and it is running like dream

There is no difference between a 9 and 10 speed crank when you measure the distyance between the blades.

Are the 'blades' interchangeble? (same fastener spacings)

No, the blades are not, because they have different hole placings.

Check with where you buy it from.

On my old roadie they swapped out my Tiagra 53/39 for a SRAM Compact crank a while back - I'm pretty sure the SRAM crank was not 9spd or 10spd specific. I didn't have much chain wear though.
