Hi Guys,

I've just spent the better part of the morning reading every one of the 52 pages on the "Boast about your latest purchases here..." thread and it's motivated me to put my hankering for an Mtb into action.

So if the Hubbers Brains Trust would be kind enough to help with some advice I'd be very grateful.

Here goes...

I am a very happy Specialized Roubiax owner, purchased two years ago after a 12 year lay-off owing to unhappy knees.

I had a very good set-up which has been proven and allowed my dodgy knees to survive the rigours of the 94.7 amongst others.

I now would love to ride offroad and am concerned about interfering with my road bike set-up.

I would need to find a Mtb as close to my road set-up as possible.

Also how would I transfer the cleat adjustments from road to mtb shoes.

My question is : how do I go about finding a mtb with similar geometry, compatible to my road set-up, if that's at all possible?

When I re-read this question it does seem like a bit of a weird ask - hope it makes sense?

Thanks in advance.

Suggest you go 29er hardtail with 2x10 gearing - most similar setup to road imho.

Best value for money (in my book) is the Momsen range. You can get a top alu bike with full XT for about R19K if I remember right. The carbon frame goes for about 25K.

I don't know how you'll keep your road cleat setup for mtb. If you've got roadie shoes, keep them for the road bike and get a pair of mtb shoes & pedals for off road (spd).

Everything else is transferrable (you don't need a mtb helmet, clothing, etc).

Oh, and you'll be getting tubeless I'm sure, so unless you're used to tubbies on the road, that might be a new thing to learn (maintenance, knowing correct pressures, etc.)

Get a professional set up done as has been stated above

I would also go the 29 hard tail route. It's what I did when I decided to get back into MTB after almost 10 years off. It helped a lot.

Oh and for goodness sakes no matter how clever and skilled you might think you are go and do a skills clinic with someone like Sean, the Tread Mag editor owner.

One last thing would be to make sure your medical aid is sorted and you know where the closest casualty is. In fact put it in your gps. Then again perhaps it is just me.always had more enthusiasm than skill.
