Patches...you need to come down to kzn in September for the Lynford descent

http://www.roag.co.za/enter-an-event/trail/lynford-trail-run.aspx

"Day 1 SATURDAY 7 September

Have you got your camelbaks? Entrants will register at Lynford School on Saturday morning (06h00 - 07h00), after which they will be herded into a truck and taken to the start of one of the most spectacular trail runs the province has seen.

Warm up in the truck on the way there, you will hit the single track running!!

This 30 km route takes runners along the Sani2c Day 2 section. It winds through the single track onto a load zone and up to 'Wow' which affords one the best views of the Umkomaas River. This is where you will realise there's no kidding …. 'it's all downhill'. Then onto Yankee Doodle, and a short climb after that will take you to Murray's Meander. Take your time and soak up the dramatic beauty of this famous section of track. Just to think that there was no passable way before this track was hand cut through the towering cliffs that drop down to the mighty Umkomaas. On you head to the notorious Nick's Pass overlooking the Umkomaas River Valley. You will do 8 switchbacks as you descend onto Sosiba's Section towards Msayana School.

You will meander through to a few rocky patches and short steep gravel decent that leads you through to Mchunu's Highway, and you can get the look at Umkomaas River which gets ever closer as you decend …. how are those legs? MamTholo's Pride, a smooth, fast, bush-lined footpath leads you past remote homesteads, and then you enter the real African bush and thorn trees for 3km before the final climax of Tamika's Detour, which tests those legs until you reach the banks of the Umkomaas River.

Your jelly legs will take some cooling down in the river as you hit new flat terrain. It might take a bit of getting used to, but keep a look out as you wind along the river for wildlife, which should distract you from the pain. Enjoy Nyala Pans … bet you never knew about this beautiful remote bush lodge. Before you know it you will be entering sugarcane and you are home and dry, finishing on Mike Woodburn's farm. Relax a little before you are herded back onto the truck to celebrate at Lynford School. "

I'm repeating myself here but my perception is that those kind of riders are more the exception than the rule. Most (yes not all) riders in the front groups of the Sani had at least the basic technical skills and most would agree that Sani isn't the most technical race around anyway.

Besides, it's easier to improve your fitness than your technical skills. So no good reason why good technical riders should be stuck behind the slow noobs beyond day 1.

Yeah, ultimately a system to keep everyone happy would be very hard to achieve.

For instance, lets say there's a rider who is sitting in the later batches because A - he doens't do any SASeeidng XCM races (so Day 1 he's near the back), and Day 2 & 3 he starts near the back because he potters up the hills.

One could keep the seeding process the same. But if that lower seed rider puts in fast technical descent times on day 1, then he can get bumped up a few batches. Almost like "bonus points".

Sure, on the climbs he'll probably drop right back, but most of those are wide enough to allow for passing. So the riders who achieved the same seeding as him based on their overall time and not on some fast descending "bonus points" won't get held up.

But yeah... in life, one can never keep everyone happy

In general I had a lot of fun. Loved the singletrack descents on day 1. Day 2's descent had the same potential to put a smile on my face. Was my first Sani. Would I do it again though...

...probably not. It was more a bucket list thing. Not my preferred discipline of riding, and despite what Sani die-hards may say, the Umkho descent isn't quite the best singletrack in the world   *flame suit on* hahaha!

Awesome experience though!

Here i agree with you, it has majestic views and all of that but as far as riding goes, its lekker but not mind blowing.

PS you would love j2c, every day has an enduro type run where joe soap can podium above the pro's and get the some cool prizes and the respect(ala fast and furios) Dipslick's partner won it on day 2....and according to him he nearly killed himself, but was well worth it....Go Graham!

Rouxtjie... we need to get you a big bike (even if it's a rental) and get you to the Port Du Soliel. That is mind blowing.

Peach, Super_mil, and myself are turning green with envy as we watch Omega Man count down to his 2013 Morzine trup, and we have to wait another year.

Don't tell anyone but that is my next project, after my tupperware racing machine is built of course....dead seriaas

Yeah, great addition from Wappo.

But I'll have to do an extra 10 star jumps a day to last 9 days, hahaha!

But Sani is batched, even day 1 is batched using your sas seeding. But for day 2 they use your day 1's results.

And day 1 is NOT technical which means the roadies can all get a good seeding for day 2.

Yip and power to them, the bled through their eyeballs to get it....I am assuming you talking A-batch guys, they are the dirt roadies...don't confuse them with weekend warriors

Why do people think hanging in group doing threshold for 3 hours on day 1 is a walk in the park?

Patches you are right about the better technical guys don't race.

In the Trail going down to the stream just before Push of a climb there was a guy in front on me in the queue going down the single track balanced on his FROUNT wheel!!!! Style I tell you Style!

Rouxtjie, where is the Longdrop Pass???

Other side of spioenkop....I get wet dreams about that section, it is that good...also junior's bush tunnel at mankele(day 2 of 3towers)...I could ride those for the rest of my life and die a happy man.

To be honest I haven't seen a dirt-roadie with a pathetic amount of technical skills....They are fast on any of the terrain at Sani as an example. I think they are confusing dirtroadies with weekend warriors, and I agree those are the guys that walk and cause bottlenecks.

I completely disagree with you. I am a weekend warrier and I certainly don't walk and cause bottlenecks on the singletrack. Yes, I walk on some of the uphills, but never get in anyone's way. I have such limited riding time (1 day on a weekend) that I spend as much of that riding the fun technical stuff and not just training on boring jeep tracks.

I was with Patches and Hayley on the Umko descent and we saw SO many people who couldn't even ride around a switchback, but yet they cruised up hills. One guy was from Zim and said there is no singletrack there to ride and admittied he was struggling.
