Hi guys,

I've seen some topics on this- and would like to share some recent findings...

After too much googling and installing too much video editing software- I found an easier way which I would like to share. If you're a pro or have a Mac, this is not for you...

Some advice to me was to convert the mp4 files to avi files before i can use it in MovieMaker. It also works, but here's a easier way without doing the conversion.

Step 1. Make sure your codecs are up to date, latest version is 9.9.

Simply google "K-lite mega codec pack" available from numerous sites and download

Step 2. If you're running XP or Vista (like me) download the latest Windows Movie Maker free from microsoft. Again, google it and download, very easy. Win7 and Win8 should have the correct Movie Maker.

Step 3. Run Movie maker, select "Tools", "Options", then "Compatibility" and select ALL the boxes.

The above mentioned are once offs.

Step 4. go the video file that you have recorded, say "GOPR0056.mp4" and rename the file extension to "avi" like "GOPR0056.avi"

Step 5. Drag and drop in Windows Movie Maker and go crazy.

As mentioned, this is nothing hi-tec, but a great way to start off for new owners like me :)

The alternative to renaming the videos is to convert them from mp4 to avi with the GoPro CineForm software from the official GoPro site. As mentioned, this takes time- but I prefer to do my "trimming" in CineForm rather than Win Movie Maker...

I've always liked Sony Vegas Pro( Running version 11 now), very simple to use once you have watched some basic tutorials on editing. You can render the output format to almost anything as well.

Is it freeware?

Trimming is much easier with CineForm. The time wasting issue I have with Movie Maker is that it can take forever to import the video before you can start editting.

Saving your final movie with sound and all the rest can also take a bit of time.

Anyway to speed this up? Or do I need a bigger, brighter, better computer? ;)

The worst, is uploading a 900MB (fairly small in movie terms!) file to youtube! That is damn slow! Then after all that time ... when you finally watch it on youtube you realise just how much of the quality has gone down the drain.

Anyone know what is the optimal upload settings for youtube to preserve quality?

(I have noticed that if you keep the screen size small, it certainly helps!)

Thanks for the advise.

Where is the best place to mount your GoPro? I have bought the chest strap and the video still bounces a lot when I record.

K-Edge mount on the handle bar! Alloy K-Edge mounts are far superior to the GoPro shake-me-all-about-plastic-crap mounts. No need to add an extension with K-Edge to make the camera even more unstable just so it can face in the right direction either.

If you are not too worried that a helmet mounted camera can break your neck in a serious crash, then that is the second best option.

Come to think of it ... guess what the GoPro team use at events where they have riders using their cameras???

you can get some of the K-edge from CWCycles. They are online if you aren't in Cape Town. They don't have the full range but I think they have the handle bar and saddle mount. (Saddle mount is great!)

As for editing software: if you want an easy, point and click package, you can't go wrong with photoshop elements 11 (not free). No need to convert the video files before editing, import is pretty much instantaneous and it is almost a one click export to youtube, dvd, pc etc.
