I moved up from KZN and I ride the spruit mid morning a few times during the week from 12th ave to Emmarentia on my own. Am I asking for trouble? Have never had a problem but have seen posters up regarding bike jackings recently and felt uneasy !!

Hi Boot. I live in Cheetah Crescent and use the Spruit occasionally. We have never had any problems but are always aware of our surroundings and keep a look out for any potential danger spots. I sometimes ride alone. Having lived in Riverclub in the early 1990's and Rivonia for a couple of years we have heard of problems over the years. It seems to come and go. Best advise is to be careful, avoid under the freeway towards Witkoppen Road and down the Cypress Walk area of Riverclub if lots of vagrants (also weigh up situation by the Riverside shopping centre at times if vagrants are drinking and rowdy). I would be happy to meet for a chat if you want, send me a PM.

Howzit guys. I'm in Joburg till Friday and want to session the spruit. I'm keen on the gnarly bits and delta area. Never been. Is it cool on your uis or should I ride with someone?

A few of us are hitting the Scout Hall dirt jumps after work today, if you're keen for the more gnarly stuff the spruit has to offer.

A lot of work has gone into cleaning up the Spruit and making it more safe:

Sadly I would say yes. Whilst I frequently ride the spruit alone, sine recent events I feel it is only safe(er) to do so from Fratelli's up to Emmarentia and back. The Bryanston side of the spruit is more secluded, more vagrants, smellier, and where the muggings happened. Especially watch out under any bridges.

True, A lot of cleaning up has been done between PnP and Riverside Shopping Centre. Nice work! Sadly it seems the vagrants are there to stay.

Cool. Just booked in at fourways. Where do I go and how do I get there and what time?

Hi

I used to ride the Spruit often but stopped when the bike-jacking started. The Hub has gone quiet, how is the Spruit currently, are people still riding and have there been any recent incidents?

Spruit is packed with riders every day of the week and even more so at weekends, there has been a major clean up of the spruit (vegitation) and vagrants in the last couple of months and is still used by many riders especially at the weekends

so long as you stay upriver from fratellis you should be fine. i live in parkhurst and have been using the spruit for 6 odd yrs now, often riding by myself. grab some mates if you want to go towards riverclub side to be safe.

rode the spruit this past weekend from home ( enenvale ) , been while since i been on it and i big thank you needs to go out to the people who are cleaning it up ( vegitation ect ). also saw some signage warning riders against a hijacker ( pic of him on a board ) .

But sadley i must say the number of vagrants on the bryanston side up to fritellies is worse than i have ever seen , they everywhere , so please gents/ladies on that side of the spruit be careful and ride in numbers .
