Hi all.

Will my Shimano XT 10 speed rear derailer work with a set of road shifters from shimano?

I have a cx project in mind and just wanted to confirm this.

Many thanks

Not sure where I read it but I read the 9 speed mtb stuff works with the road from 10 speed

Indeed! I'm running a 10spd 105sti with a 9spd XTR derailleur on a monster cross bike and it works perfectly.

I once had that set up on a tandem - 9 speed road STI with 9 speed mtb rear derailleur and 9 speed mtb casette. Not sure about 10 speed, but suspect that it will work.

I see Shimano didn't change the pull ratio of their road groups when they moved to 10 speed.

On the other hand both Shimano and Sram change theirs when their MTB groupsets went to 10 speed.

Meaning Shimano 9 speed MTB is incompatible with Shimano 10 speed MTB. Same goes with SRAM.

Funny thing is the pull ratio of the Shimano 10 speed MTB is so close to pull ratio of the SRAM 9 speed that with a slight modification (6mm washer) you can get a Shimano 10 speed rear derailleur to work with a SRAM 9 speed shifter flawlessly

The sti dictate how much the rear derailer moves had no problems using 7/8/9 or 10 speed shifters with rear derailer

If the rear derailer is one of the new DynaSYS ones it will not work. The leverage is out of synch with road components. In the old days we could build all sorts of Frankenbikes and mix components, now we can't. It is sad, especially for people with special requirements such as tandems, hand bikes and the like.
