While on the topic of injuries...

Took a little tumble about 2 weeks back resulting in broken ribs, a lot of cuts, cruises and a sore left wrist and hand.

Originally I thought the wrist and thumb was just a bit bruised with associated pain but the swelling has gone down and now the wrist and thumb both hurt a bit. Could this be sprained or worse, fractured?

Then onto the ribs. I know from my previous break (6 weeks ago :() that ribs only need time to heal. Is there anything I can do to promote faster healing? Racing on the 13th of July and Id like to be "ok" for that.

There are 3 Barrows in that practice - Brian, Michael and Andrew (Dad and 2 sons) a real family business - I think the other brother is an ob/gyn

is there any of these "brothers" that are still single?

(I may need to make a step like that due to constant injuries)

You can tape the ribs - wider the tape the better.

Your wrist... depends on the location of the pain - at the base of the thumb then there is the possibility of a fracture in the scaphoid, which has a nasty tendency to not heal well (sometimes never), and immobilisation is best - as soon as possible.

http://orthoinfo.aaos.org/topic.cfm?topic=A00012 will give you an idea of the location if you think you are in the area - off to xray.

Cally, try Andrew Janse Van Rensburg who is a physio and works with the SA Triathlon team. His rooms are at the bottom of Conrad Drive (above Nandos/Mexican Fresh).

His place is called Endurance Sport & Wellness Centre 011 787 8244

Feels more like the capitate and hamate as well as the metacarpal in the thumb. I have full mobility and the pain is very mild but I can't really hold onto a coffee mug or my phone for example. Hand feels a bit weak.

Will tape the ribs. Is it worth getting some dry needling done?

Go xray it... my money is on a fracture of some description, and I would want to exclude that as a first alternative - if you don't want to do that and would rather diy - then immobilise it - skateboard wrist guard and bandage as a suggestion - make sure to include the thumb - 10 days or so (nights included), and if it is still painful, then definitely xray.

Just a note - ignoring wrist injuries tends to lead to long term arthritis...

Dry needling in my opinion has about the same effect as using q20 in your BB...... might work for a bit, but does not solve anything, except the weight in your pocket.

So - out by an inch.... approximately... :) my bad...

I actually thought Robert has an independent practice - I am well be wrong though - wrong side of town for me - or I could just be confused.

Good lads all - Brian is my favourite the way he treats his socks... bugger took shears to mine the last time I saw him. :)

 Too funny!

Peter's daughter is in in my little girl's class - reckons he is considered the black sheep of the family having not followed the established family tradition.

You are correct on Robert - his practice is in Morningside I think

Repetitive strain/overuse injuries are largely due to poor biomechanics which may result from multiple problems. The body is designed to move and will maintain that despite what goes on inside. Our body most often will become injured and then protect itself which alters the movement. I myself am a mountain biker and have got to be dead or dying to stay off my bike and I'm sure most of us are like that too. We train/ride through pain! As mentioned above, Chiropractors are ideal to handle these sorts of imjuries because we assess biomechanically what the tissues of the body are doing and correct it with manual therapies. Give my practice a call on 0117840052/54 and make an appointment with me, Jaidan or email me on mays.jay@gmail.com should you have any questions. I am in Morningside, Sandton and I work SATURDAYS!
