I fully agree with XTC1 here. Nice bike there chap. Defo worth the cash.

Lots of mechanics cannot bleed sram properly because they leave the calipers mounted on the frame, and you cannot get all the airbubbles out when they in that position. Simple trick is to remove the caliper while bleeding and turn them upside down and tap them. I've bled many Avid and SRAM brakes with no problems...just don't follow their instuctions because they suck. You have the same problem with migura brakes. I bought a set off CAAD4 because 4 bike shops couldn't get them bled properly. it took me 30 minutes and they were schweet, that was 18 months ago and they still schweet.

Now please guys - hijack is off - can we get back to your recommendations on this 12K HT

It is not the bleeding thats the problem ... Avid brakes are noisy no matter how you bleed them or how many times you bleed them after they start screaming. They just dont brake as lekka as Shimano but they break much more than Shimano.

Back to R12k = Merdia Big Nine 900

Air Fork

SLX, Shifters, FD, Crahk and XT RD

You should be able to pick them up around R11 500 currently.

I have a mate who wants to start MTBing. His budget is 12K and he wants a 29er.

So what bike would be his best choice and value for money

Linden Cycles has the GT Zaskar elite at that price small. They also have the Merida 900 at below 12 k probably medium also the scott. I was there on Saturday bought my misses merida full xt hardtail 9r for 14 k last one

you won't get rid of screaming brakes by bleeding them. The noise has more to do with the pads and the rotors. I have only had screaming brakes when going down really steep descents. When we did The Quest, everyones brakes screamed through the DH sections in the forest (all makes) it sounded like a cat choir was actually very funny, it even made the riders briefing video for that night. I've just changed to metal pads so I will probably have made it worse.

 I know how to sort out brakes and I am not even referring to my own experience with Avid.

Just an observation on what I see (hear in Avid's case) coming into the workshop daily.

Avids are noisy and they break not brake!

i got a Momsen AL329R and I'm impressed. It's got the Snakeskin tyres which is perfect for the ZTR rims, seats so nicely without any issues or pressure lost since I did the conversion almost two weeks ago. Shifting is pretty awesome as well and it's a real smooth ride. The only thing I am going to change on the bike is the brakes. On both my previous bikes I had Shimano brakes, now the Momsen has Avid Elixir 1 and since day one I disliked them. They make noises, the front brake vibrates and sqeeuks and braking power is not as good as I hoped.

Specialized Stumpjumper HT alu 29er for R13500 or Specialized Carve HT alu 29er for R13000. If you can spare the extra R1000 odd. Stumpjumper has X9/X7 groupo with Reba and Carve has XT/SLX with Fox.
