Sadly old Boots is getting a bit long in the tooth now, happens to all of us unfortunately, but he has had an illustrious career, maybe not as good as some, but then a lot better than others, however I still think he still has the makings for a good showing on one or two of the really steep climbs, hope so anyway, but we will soon see I guess.

Hope so!

This has the makings of an open race. Hurrah for the ballies Scarpo and Basso!

One or two surprises

Not so much from Astana, bringing one of the strongest line-ups in the Vuelta in recent years, nor from TTT World Champions Omega Pharma QuickStep and its big engines, nor even Belkin, down to eight men after Theo Bos was ruled out by MPCC rules for a pre-race low cortisol test.

Rather that NetApp-Endura did remarkably well to finish 7th in a result top heavy with WorldTour squads.

And then Katusha promised better but never looked comfortable, rode raggedly and struggled to bring in five finishers as Dani Moreno flagged under the kite.

Finally, Garmin-Sharp has hardly brought its best TTers here but I cannot remember seeing such a lowly ranking for the Argyle.

Hard to call a podium on this Tour...

Nibs definitely, barring any bad days or crashes.

Valverde could save some legs after losing out on that windy day at TdF with his puncture.

Kreuziger & J Rod - rested enough?

Basso - hungry enough? Really hope so.

Of course, the TTT really threw the cat amongst the GC pigeons (already!!)
