My other half is currently running a SLX 38-24 Crankset, but she's battling a bit on really steep hills so I was thinking about making it a bit easier for her. She likes the 2x10 though so I don't want to change to a triple.

So:

- Is it possible to run a 22 tooth inner ring or is the jump from 38-22 too great (have heard that 14 is the recommended max)?

- If this is not possible, do Shimano bring out a 36-22 combo or could I use blades from a triple?

Thanks.

No. Rule of thumb is a 1.5 jump. For example:

26 - 39 (or 26-38 in Shimano's case)

24 - 36 (or 24-38 in Shimano's case)

As long as it's 10spd (or compatible) chainrings it will work. You can buy aftermarket chainrings in those sizes. As long as it's Shimano compatible it can be any make.

Thanks for the advice, will see what I can find.

11-39 cassette then...

Does such a thing even exist? Have only seen up to 36 tooth (SRAM or Shimano) on a 10sp...

KCNC make a 11-38T MTB cassette.... but at a cost.

Will be cheaper if you can get a replacement front 22T chainring to replace the 24T?
