Could this be something we could use to track down stolen bicycles in the future?

Tile, a new product that combines tiny plastic tags with a companion smartphone app, promises to help lost stuff get found once and for all. But that’s just part of its potential. If adopted widely, a crowdsourced network of users could be a powerful resource for recovering stolen stuff too.

Can't a thief just remove the Tile?

You know what will really work, if manufacturers imprinted a QR code on the frame. And when a bike gets sold, an approved bike shop registers new the new owner's details online to that QR code. Almost like RICA for cellphones.

When you sell your bike you simply have to register the new owner at a LBS.

Then you can easily scan any bike's code with your smartphone and see previous owners' history

Yes, but what if the device was imbedded into the frame? Then there is no way to remove it so you can track your bike through the network.
