AC ligament shoulder separation

Hey Tammy, maybe also send him a pm message as he may not be following the thread, good luck!

Hi Tammy,

Just saw your post, and happen to be recovering from a grade 4 AC joint dislocation. I am training for an international goal, and in consultation with two doctors I decided on the hook-pin surgery. My fiancé had the same injury, and still struggles with it subluxating constantly 5 years later. His was left to recover with physio and rehab, and is now considering surgery to salvage what they can at this stage. This supported my decision to have the surgery, but each person recovers differently. Please bare in mind that I am the type of person that will consider cutting as the last possible option, and believe strongly in allied professions (physio, chiro, natural medicine).

I was off my bike for 5 days after the surgery, and then on my indoor trainer for the next 3 weeks. Then I was out on my bike on the road as soon as the sling was off (3 weeks to the day from surgery). I have had 4 weeks of physio which will continue as needed going forward, with some Biokineticist interventions also.  Yesterday I saw my surgeon who is wildly impressed with the range of motion I have regained in the rehab time. My plate will be removed after 4 months from the surgery, after which he says I will have 100% function (at the moment I think I am maybe 95%, only certain things are limited by the plate and I am making daily improvements in strength)

I absolutely believe that the course of treatment was right for ME, but every person is different. I can do things now that I shouldn't be able to do with the plate in. I am very fortunate to have had an excellent surgeon, 2 fantastic sport physicians and a phenomenal physio that have given of their time and professional opinions to give me the best future in my sporting career (I am 29 with a corporate job. Time is of the essence for me to get the most from the time I have left on my bike, but I am also young enough to care deeply about how my decisions today will affect my body in 50 years time)

I see Allison Dendy, a physio in Kyalami and Dr Mokete at Fourways Life.

I wish you all the best in your recovery.

Hi, I see you posted this back in 2013, however, I am looking for someone who is willing to try conservative measures with a type 3 AC joint dislocation. I live in JHB and was hoping you could pass on the persons details who helped you with your rehabilitation. I'm only 19 and don't want to go the surgery route.

Get this assessed by the best at your age - you don't want a perpetual subluxating joint to live with - or an arthritic shoulder at age 40....

Go with whatever he recommends - he has fixed both Talus and my shoulders....  and between us we have a ton of medical and injury experience... :) consider this free advice.

I've joined this injury club. Grade 3 and a broken pinkie finger on other arm so I'm very uncomfortable and maybe a bit grumpy. Happened on Saturday 16/12/17. The pain has subsided quite a bit. Most specialists in town are on holiday so I might have to wait until early January. My GP is doing some enquiries on my behalf so can only wait and see. Typing with one hand sucks.

Sorry to hear mate, hope it all gets fixed up again like new, don't be afraid to tell us how it happened, we can all learn a little from your unfortunate tumble!?

Okay, I fell at Garden route trail park, it happened so quick I can't say for sure what went wrong.

The trail that runs below the big loop area has some big steep berms, left and right very close together, going from a right to a left I just lost it, wheel went 90deg and I went OTB landed head and shoulder first.

I reckon my Spez Ambush helmet took the brunt, it's cracked with a piece broken out.

I also have a broken pinkie finger and some bruised ribs along with my completely shattered and destroyed EGO. LOL

Enjoy the festive season and stay safe everyone.

Ow, those are the worst, not pushing it too hard and something as simple as a wheel washing out or catching a bump results in getting chucked unexpectedly. I think the unexpectedness of the situation often means you can't catch yourself at all and therefore the injury can be quite bad relative to the situation.

Some of my worst wipe outs have been wheels washing out, it's just so sudden one minute you are up next you are down, slam so hard.

Heal up soon man!
