Pity...

I used this stuff at Joberg2c and was scraping the crap out between my 11t & 12t gears becasue they were useless due to all the caked up squirt mixed with dirt. I swore in about 5 made up languages and 2 other hubbers bore witness to this. Maybe its great for a road bike but not for a MTB.

Changed to that purple stuff and have never looked back or needed to re-lube on a ride.

Thats me experience

I use GO, similar to Squirt. It has a build up but I clean my bike after most rides so its not too much of an issue but I dont think I would use it for a multi day event when you dont have time to muck about!

Thanks a lot for all the replies. To singlespeed guy, where can i look for the purple extreme and what is a fair price to pay for it. Also if someone knows if WD 40 or GT85 are avail locally.

Hey Bavmorda

Purple extreme is usually sold at most bike shops... In the Cape I know that Olympic and CWC stock it. In PTA I know that Fritz Pienaar stock it but it is generally on hand. I would say around 130 ZAR's for 120ml (4 oz) will do the trick in finalizing a purchase transaction... It really is a great lube

Good luck and happy riding!

Ah man you are stingy - dont even share your lube with me! Or it must be so bad and thus why you always steel mine.

I worry when I hear you guys are sharing lube.....

Thanks again guys. So went to my LBS last night. They did not have Purple Extreme. Was told the supplier does not bring it into SA any more. If some one knows where in east side of JHB i can look for it would be great. The owner recommended White Lightning Clean Ride saying they are using it in the shop all the time and it is good. I can not compare it to anything else that is why i would not know, but bought it for now. The shop did not have a lots of varieties and non of the brands that i was familiar with or you guys suggested here.

To Patches, where are you getting your Motul from if you don't mind me asking, i would like to try it. It is very famous oil brand oversees I think French for engines. Have not seen it here.

To RudoJ the same. Where can i look for Rock n Roll Extreme Blue East side of JHB if possible.

To hayleyearth: Personally I'm waiting with huge interest to read about your results. Where are you going to post your results? In this thread or some other place.

P.S. After i lubricated and left it for few hours, went outside for few spins. Bike felt great and was changing gears smoothly. But definitely would like to try other lubricants as well. Happy riding.

Sorry, just to add. The only brand that i knew in the LBS was Motorex, but hellishly expensive and did not feel like spending that much. Does any one try them before and any thoughts. Was also the only biodegradable one that they had in the shop.

Hated it....probably the dirtiest lube of them all and didn't last long before the chain squealed...some guys like it though.

Ok so I was reading an article about strange cycling statistics (I cannot find the link as I stumbled upon it last night and cannot for the life of me navigate my way back!) and on top of ultimate jockey wheel size and tooth configuration for the smoothest shifting under less resistance and the effects on your power output by lack of sleep, it says that the Rock 'n Roll Gold is in fact the best lube on the market.......

Don't read too much into that article....best ito watts saved shouldnt be the the measuring stick for lubes.

For me a lube must last 100km on mtb terrain without needing more in Gauteng

It must extend the whole drivetrain's life or simply put...lubricate

It must not clog up the drivetrain and thus easy to clean

Absolutely agree with you Rox, now what that lube will be and where to find it. You are saying that Motorex is not worth the money. Funny such a big brand oversees. Speedguy, do you know where to get Rock n Roll Extreme or Gold for that matter?

Guys i really appreciate your replies, but please post also where i can look for this stuff in JHB. I don't know many bike shops or almost none. The shop close to me is in Edenvale, but it is a very small shop and they did not have any of the stuff that you are recommending. I would like to visit a big shop with as much as varieties as possible. I know there is a big shop in Boksburg, Catjies or something similar but never been there. Would they have all or most of the options that you are referring to. Thanks.

Agreed... I don't put much store in articles but thought if it got good ratings from a fairly considerable testing then it may be worth a shout out here. Because I ride a bike with gears maybe 3 or 4 times a year during long expedition type adventure races I am probably not the best person to offer expert advice on lube!

My chain doesn't need to shift and can go a few hundred km before it starts 'zinging' on the chain ring...

I was more interested in the info they were pumping out about the power output of the guy who rode 4 and a half days non stop to beat the record at the divide. Planning on riding it year after next and stumbled upon the article of obscure bike tests and stats while doing some link hopping

For me, motorex made a mess, sure it went on like butter cause its quite "thin" but not only is it a bitch to clean off the cassette...(you have to remove the whole thing and sit with a brush and clean green) but it made quite a few black splat marks on the frame. Chain also started moaning earlier than with other lubes...so I am now using it for hinges and creeks around the house. It aint coming near my bikes again.

Rock and roll blue checks the three boxes mentioned in an earlier post. It lasts long(didn't have to re-apply on any of the joberg2c long days that were 110km+), I have also used multiple brands and types of lube through different seasons and terrain. None remarkably outperforms the other(brand or oil / wax based)...I tracked this with a sporttracks 3 plugin where it tallies up the km you did on a component,so as far as drivetrain life goes...again rock and roll blue gives me good performance ito extending the whole drivetrain's life. And then of course it must be easy to clean, again I am using joberg2c as a example. I never had any paste caking on my cassette, rings or chain, after I had a ****, shave and shampoo in the afternoons, I would go to my bike with a little rag and my bottle of rock and roll....apply lots and clean chain as per instructions....never had an issue and drivetrain was pristine at the end. Some of my friends started experiencing chain suck(on new components btw) and shifting problem(chain wouldn't go into the last two cassette cogs) because of all the caked mess squirt left on it. This started a happening on day3 where we went from reitz to sterkfontein. The poor guys had to sit with sticks / spoons scraping all the gunk out of their drivetrains...normal degreaser didn't even touch it.

To each their own, and some people might something else out of a lube...but for me rock and roll extreme(blue one) works a charm.

I normally get it from epic cycles in centurion or the lab sometimes has it, but it goes quick, so if you see some...buy

The only down is you use alot and it isn't cheap...but you can't have your cake and eat it hey.
