I am currently using a 2x10 and have been toying with the idea of changing to the SRAM 1x11 as the new XO1 is somewhat more within my price range!

The question I have to you guys that have been riding the 1x11 is what size chain ring are you using?

I ask this because the XX! spider allow a range of chain rings from a 36 all the way down to a 28. The XO1 has a different spider and the smallest that can be fitted is a 30.

Is 30 small enough on a 29 for South Africa terrain?? The SRAM guys comment that we here do not need the 28, and in fact most people are using a 32 or 34.

I am not a Pro so would appreciate feedback from "normal" guys!!

I have a 34T on the front... I race at a level below Pro, so I would probably say you would be safe to ride a 32T or even a 30T if you struggle a bit on hills and don't need the 10/12T sprockets to power you over 40kmph

I've got a 30T on the front, and regularly still use the 42 on the back. I'm considering a 28T for next time. But then I don't ride long rides on dirt roads, my trails are straight up and straight down.

started off with a 32T but only used the bottom 5 gears now Im riding a 36 in the front and its perfect, I don't get stuck in the 10 and 11 all the time on the flats or run out of gears and on the climbs I only go onto the 42 when the gradient is really high. But in general the guys like a 34, good allrounder for xc and marathon

Currently running 1 x 10 with 34 tooth and 11-36 cassette. Mainly ride at Tokai (close to home)

Will have an 11-41 soon but will only be necessary for longer marathon rides. (may even go 36 if I ever get fit enough)

I Have a 32 on a 1x10 setup so yes 30 should be small enough, but in the end nobody is the same. You should look at the ratios.

I just checked out sheldonbrown site. He has a gear ratio calculator. A 34 will give me the same ratio I currently have 1,7 ( 36 x 28) and a big ratio of 7,3 just 0,3 less than I have!!

I'm running 1x10, 34,11/40, perfect for most rides.

Save yourself some cash and run XX1 or XO1 upfront and 10 speed on the back, works out a lot cheaper and you get almost the same gearing as full XX1 or XO1 for a good couple of grand cheaper, use the spare cash to by an extra chain ring or two in different sizes.

Where did you get the 10 speed 11/40 casette, or is it that general lee adapter?

running 34, its seemed to be a good balance, I have enough gears for climbing but only really use the bottom half of the cassette.

Will use a 36 for some races.
