thats actually a plan...you can ride a a loop at cascades then head up into Mt verde via that route (exit left by the first table top on the downhill course)..then exit mt verde and go do Grace...i reckon thats a solid 40km...maybe 50 if you go back ....although the only problem with that is getting back into Mt Verde as you need a permit

edit....also about 1500m in climbing

Isn't there an electric fence between Cascades and Mt Verde at the top? We went through a gate near the start of the DH course after being dropped off by the shuttles. Pretty sure that gate will be closed now though. I do remember seeing the yellow boards up there though.

And yes, shed loads of climbing, but the trip back down..... makes it all worthwhile!

i have not been on the marked route yet...as i usually attack mt verde from the main gate.....but....they have been advertising it is a viable route so maybe the gate is open during the day?...not sure

Anyway my recommendation for Free easily accessible trails is Grace College...then under the freeway and into Cedara/hilton forests ...... I am willing to be a trail guide if needed

Head out and do the Karkloof 30km route from the KK country club. No missioning to find where to sign an indemnity etc. It's all done at the club. The trail is pretty well marked and there is great riding on route.

Howick, you can sign an indemnity at the Hospital (ironic, I know) opposite the Corner Post Restaurant. You can ride from Corner Post or park a short distance up the hill at the exit of Home Jerome. From there take Home Jerome to Harrys onto Goblins Glen, down to weir way, then you should be able to see the fire tower. There are a number of options up to the tower, which you can pick and choose from. They are all fun.

The Howick trail map can be found here. Be prepared to do a little bit of adventuring as you can get a wee bit lost sometimes.

Howick and Karkloof are both amazing but I would go to Karkloof because the trail is marked for the distance and not named for a short piece of track. Howick trails are all individual trails and if you dont know where you are going can seem disjointed to someone who doesnt know them. At karkloof you can make up a series of rides by doing eg. the 30 + 15 to get 45km, no guessing as to which track to take. My advice is to take enough water as its been dry and windy lately and the only place to top up is at the club.

You sir are now officially an honorary KZN resident. Nobody that lives outside our province should know that much about a local trail.

Still not local enough to be KZN champ  , but I'm getting a post box as an insurance policy for next year!

Having a girlfriend who resides in Howick means I get to play on the 'local' trails regularly.

Ohhhhh! I see that still hurts... Just use her address and say that you live together  (See I can do stuff like this because you don't ride in my age group..... B) )

One of the clubs set up a 30km loop at Cascades during the WC. It started at the VA and it might still be marked. Rode up towards Grace College and then back down to Cascades. Not sure about indemnity and cost etc...

You need a permit to get into Mt Verde. R100 til year end. Thereafter R200 per annum.
