Told my wife that I needed to get stronger rims because I weight to much for my Crest rims....she suggested that I save my money and loose weight.

Ouch......!!!

Mine are built with a2z hubs and sap X-ray spokes. 1300gr.

I'm 90kg on a carbon hard tail.

My general attitude is if it breaks I get new ones.... They still going. Still Tru after 4000km

According to NoTubes.com the maximum recommended rider weight for STAN'S ZTR Crest wheel sets is 86kg (190lbs). Are there any heavy mtb'ers (>100kg) that make use of these wheelsets on intermediate surfaces? Any problems or should I consider ZTR Arch EX? Problem is that the ZTR Crest comes as original equipment on the specific bike.

Advice please (except to loose body mass ;-))

I am at 110kgs and do get in to the air every now and then! and I pretzeled my rear wheel that Ruan Deysel built. No issues with him in fact he probably meant it held together longer. I was always riding them carefully, which probably meant I was not hitting the things that I liked to do.

I went to Arch EX and must say I don't feel any difference but I am more confident on them.

So don't waste your money and ride a rim that you know is not rated for your weight. Build some strong wheels that you know will always last.

My 2 cents worth

Think I may have had a friday wheelset (if there's such a thing) - also have crests on a2z hubs and also ride a carbon hardtail but have had to have the back wheel straightened a few times and I'm under 60kg.

Had them on my Momsen SL650B and two other bikes. Only time they needed attention was when a buddy smacked a tree. On the first 2 bikes I was quite a bit lighter, on the Momsen I weighed 95 and they held up fine. I don't mind the odd jump, drop, huck and chuck.

So I would say it depends a lot on

1. Quality of the build

2. Sum of the (wheel's) parts

3. How you ride

4. The bike it's on

5. Where you ride (Jonkers, Eden, Tokai and Majik aren't exactly rock and root free.)

Having said all that, Arch EX will probably be a safer bet. But no different than AM Classic wheels will be a safer bet than the AM Classic Race. Doesn't make it inferior.

Wrong side of 100kg on Arch Ex and been riding them for 18 months during which iv'e had plenty "mishaps" but never had issues with them.

Regards the whole "terrain" and " how you ride" thing, surely you want wheels that you are confident you can ride any terrain at your best without having to worry if your wheel will become a pretzel.

Very confident in my crests, has not let me down...no matter the terrain. The Arch rims although strong are quite a bit heavier and heavier on the worst spot. If I want absolute bulletproof, sure would go arch's with UST tyres, this combo weighs a ton...I will stick with my crests and tubeless ready snakeskin tyres that represents the light enough, strong enough butter zone

True, but for me...

1. Crest fit that bill

2. There's a limit to that.

ANY rim, wheel can break so where to stop with confidence that it won't?

EDIT:

"1. Crest fit that bill"

...on the bikes it was on and the type of riding I did on those. I didn't, for instance, build a Crest wheelset for my 150mm trail / AM bike.
