Hi,

I know this is a long shot, but I have to be in Welkom in a few weeks, and will be looking to do a nice +- 70km ride. Anyone know of any trails / routes in the area? I've done some googling, but can't find anything. It's so flat in the Free State!

I'm not sure about any in Welkom, but you will find some nice ones in Bothaville which is not that far away. There was a nice mtb race there in the last month. Maybe you need to look for cycling clubs in Welkom and cycle with them.

As an ex Welkomite. You want hills there, you climb a mine dump. No mountains that side of the world. There should be some nice trails albeit flat and fast. Give Van Riebeeck Cycle House in Welkom a buzz. The owner Johan is an ex pro I think. They are very clued up and will help you out

Enjoy!

The Outlaws stay in Virginia about 15Km from Welkom and when visiting I uasually ride some trails along the Sand river.Their was a mountain bike place called Ron Mountain bike park but looks abandoned every time I go there, but still ride around. It is on Bloudrift Gravel road next to sand river.

If you dont come right at Van Riebeeck Cycles just ask the Mayor of Welkom. You will spot her easily, she is the only tannie in town who still has all her teeth.

Haha. Thanks for all the responses. I was also thinking the sand river might offer some trails. I lived in Virginia for a long time but never rode off road. I'll go find that old mountain bike Park. Thinking a ride to Virginia, ride around the trail, and then ride back to welkom.

Love that T-shirt!

Was the weekend in Welkom. Saw a sign "Stonepark MTB trails". It was at the entrance to Riebeeckstad just after the hospital turn off. Tried to google it, but could not find it. Would appreciate it if you can give some feedback if you find it.

Ron's mtb park closed down. Not worth trying to ride there the area is full of zama zamas. There is a new xco trail in Riebeeckstad called Stonepark, it is near the water tower. Not technical at all. If you want to do the best MTB single track in the Freestate travel to Bothaville. 2 River MTB trails on the banks of the Vals and Vaal rivers offer routes as long as 60 km with at least 30 km of hand crafted purpose built single track. No major climbs but we do have one stoney koppie that offers some real technical stuff. Pm me for details and ride times. You wont regret it I promise!
