Numb Hands

I had the same thing hey. All I did was get get some esi chunky grips, raised my stem height so that my overall position was a lot more upright. Takes some of the weight and pressure off your arms and hands and puts it more on the frame and pedals. Good luck :)

Hi All,

I have this problem where after riding for about 45 min to an 1hr my hands start going numb. I have had a pro bike fit done, so from a setup point of view I'm ok. I have tried different stem lengths angles, different gloves, no gloves, bar widths and now finally I have bought a set of those ergo grips I hope this will help ? I'm even tempted to try riser bars maybe this will eliminate the pressure and weight onto my hands ?

Some 1st hand experience and input would greatly be appreciated.

I used to struggle alot with this problem

I solved it by:

Spending some cash on good quality, well fitting, softly fushioned gloves

Flipping my stem around to have a slight positive upwards slope

Rotating my handlebar just a little bit back... that means 'bottom forward'

Learning to switch my grip every minute...

+1 on core strength. Used to lean on the handlebars a lot when I started, the hub gurus advised increasing core strength - Pilates classes have helped, along with remembering to relax the arms - don't have the problem any more.

You just need more time in the saddle. Remember to have to correct posture on the bike, don't slouch. Use your core muscles to keep a proper riding posture and don't rely on your arms and hands to keep you upright. Your back will thank you for it.

An exercise I do regularly on the bike is to ride using a normal riding position with only the tips of my fingers touching the handlebars.

Also check if you are sitting correctly on your saddle and that it supports you without sliding forward and wanting to push yourself back. I found that my saddle angle was slightly forward causing me to push myself back.

Oops - book has no pictures.

Description of the issue, and why I want the Nurophen taken for 5 days - to reduce inflammation.

And the stretch - FAR better to watch this than pictures.

Can also just take a short course of normal corticosteroids (anti-inflammatory guys) for neuropraxia (numbness that wont go away)

One week, 40mg per day

A pharmacist should help you out without a script

Easier to google it... I will take my book to work and scan it in tomorrow :)

Here you go chaps - knock yourselves out... try some of these...

It's a bit odd, because the rest of the book has some basic sketches of exercises - this chapter has none - but I can see why - try and draw exercise 1 - which is harder to do than it sounds - try it...
