Not sure what he earns but very good source told me even Sauser's contract has changed from big pay at end of month to performance and results based. We still in a recession boys and we talking cycling, not golf, rugby soccer etc.As far as marketing, those were the first guys who got the bullit when the recesson hit.I take my hat off to those who do it for the love of the sport.Thats the only reason to sponser.Guys like Omnico and a few other have been quietly pouring money into the sport for decades. They are the real heros.

I thought Sauser was a retired athlete?

Pretty much what Dracs has posted already, combined perhaps a bit with more and more people including top level execs taking up riding.

The sport has a following and no doubt the numbers reflect that, although some sponsors have opted for the safer bet of sponsoring events as opposed to athletes.

Scott have reportedly made provision for a 6 figure salary for Nino to keep him on their XCO team.

Personally I'm ok with riders earning a decent salary, it's not a long term job by any stretch and they still ear far far less than other sporting codes, even at the top international level. Especially when you start looking at rugby or soccer.

I think they deserve it. Alot of time spent away from home etc. Long hours in the saddle training etc.
