26" SS Build - work in progress

Tractor

Recommended Posts

Having in a moment of madness sold my On-One Inbred to a very good mate (and fellow hubber) I needed to build another SS. I've got a really nice donour bike lined up for the crankset, wheels, etc. BUT given that I built it for an ex of mine it's a size small! Put the word out and I get a frame donated for free, nada, zilch - a brand new never been built or ridden Raleigh RM5 aluminium frame. Awesome, just one problem, it's disk brake only and the donour bike isn't; no worries I'll sort that out as the build goes along.

All good but I am going to have the frame sprayed so the first thing is to get rid of the cable guides on the top tube, etc. A quick Google search and I'm reaching for my Dremel tool! Turned out to be easier than what I thought but SLOWLY is the key, once you've cut you can't just put it back. Using the Dremel and 2 files I removed the guides that I didn't want, literally took a Sunday morning.

Next up is to strip the parts off of the donour bike and see what's going to be used and what's going to be replaced. Also need to decide on a new colour for the frame and get that sent off for spray painting. Will update as progress is made.

  • 3 weeks later...

Slow progress thanks to work driving me nuts BUT I did manage to strip the frame of all its paint.

Don't know if it's maybe the quality of the paint on the RM frame (cheap?) or the quality of the paint stripper (potently bad ass?) but it actually wasn't that bad of a job to do; basically a morning and it was done.

Thanks! :D I was going to have the frame sprayed but after stripping off all the paint I'm not so sure anymore. Perhaps polish it as you say and then clear coat it? Or can the frame just be left polished without a clear coat? Maybe powder coat it (which is like a fifth of what it costs to have the frame sprayed)?

Polish and wax. No need to clearcoat. Clear can be problematic over time with sweat and other moisture getting through pores in the paint causing surface corrosion that looks weird.

polish and wax with normal car wax. If you get scuffs or scratches, it's easy to polish out again.

Can I just use a very fine grit sandpaper or emery board / water paper to get everything shiny and then put the wax over that?

Do you have a derailleur hanger for that frame?

 I got it without one but I think I saw one at Solomons in Pta that will fit - looks like there's 2 different types of hangers for the RM frame; do you perhaps have one lying around?

When i did a similar frame, I used water paper in increasing grits up to 1200 to get rid of all the scratches and get an almost-glossy finish. Then I used burnishing compound to smooth it further and finished it up with Silvo. Apparently Autosol works very well as a polish. You can also try a drill-mounted polishing mop and aluminium polishing compound.

No hangers unfortunately. I just asked cos I saw the hanger wasn't on the frame. and you'll need one.

Here's the frame I did about 2 years ago:

I think this was an almost-done photo.

WOW! That really is awesome, well done. So much for the spray painting or powder coating idea; I reckon it needs to become a labour of love and be polished
