This looks like exactly what we need in SA. Bluetooth v4.0 - 50m range. Will only work if:

 

1) Lots of cyclists have one

2) Bike is not stripped

3) Bike is used in an urban area

What would the uptake of something like this be?

@Wired the point would be to have as many cyclists as possible buy this and install the app. The app would then be able to identify a stolen bicycle even if you drive past a stolen bicycle in your car.

 

Currently at best it is a guess as to whether a bicycle was stolen when driving a squatter on an expensive bicycle

Nice idea, but I don’t think it’s going to have to work in a high density/cyclist area like Amsterdam/new York before it even has a chance here.
