I rode the wines2whales this weeekend and used the charging facility available after Day1 (muddy and wet). Tried to download the 3 days worth of rides last night and every machine I plug the Garmin into says "this accessory is not supported" I also got a message saying something along the lines of "XFM Receiver not found".

Tried Garmin helpdek and they suggested sending the unit in to them. Anyone else had this sort of error message and is there anything availabe to sort out this error bar sending the unit to Garmin?

Hi Mackem, have had similar problem with my Edge 500 where the blue rubber cover for the USB port "fell off" and after a while, the damp eventually got in and corroded the connections. Thereafter was not able to access data off the Edge. My Edge was less than 1 year old, so was replaced under warranty. The tech at Garmin tried to get data off for me but not successful. You could try and check that all USB points on male and female side of USB are ok - maybe there is an obvious misalignment. Also try and change USB cable, in case the cable is the problem.

when you plug the unit into a USB port, see if the unit is simply seen by the computer, if yes, try and get to the activity folder, copy all the *.fit files.

and well, depending on where you are, get it to Garmin, and see if they can pull it open and get to the data, sure there must be a usb card/solid state memory chip of sort where the data is stored.

good luck.

Safe to upgrade Edge 500 to 3.3?

Yes - BUT.... it takes longer to connect to the satellite sets - maybe 2 - 3 times as long.

Think I will leave it on 3.0

Everything seems to work as is

You could do that - but there are fixes, especially in the ant+ power measurement area - so it's generally better - and for some reason I think the battery life has improved - but I can't prove that.

Have a look through the notes on the changes and see if anything they fixed is what you need, and then decide - waiting a bit longer is not such an issue.... it's just noticeable.

Thanks for your help guys - I have trawled a few other bike forums and basically they say the same thing….its a gonner!!!

It is evidently a worldwide problem with moisture. Have tried changing cables, cleaning the usb connector points with alcohol, lightly sanding the connector points and have even used the wife's hairdryer to try to get rid of any excess moisture with no joy!

It seems as if there is no way of taking the ride data off the unit, so I have lost my W2W data and Garmin tend to replace the unit in this case. The only problem with mine is that it is out of warranty and I bought it overseas so here is to hoping that Garmin is approachable in terms of refurbishment or replacement - otherwise I may give a Suunto a try!

Where are you based?

If you can bring your unit to me in Stellenbosch, I can have a go to get your data off before sending it in for replacement. Managed this once or twice before.

Garmin does offer an international warranty for R500 if bought elsewhere.

Yup I am leaving it on 3.0 also, tried the newer versions, didnt like it and rolled back to 3.0.

The newer versions takes forever to locate satellites.

If it aint broke, dont fix it.
