Jonkershoek - what a gem

Jonkers is a magical place! Go up to the "saaltjie" and take the singletrack down from there. There is a nice rock-wall ride. Awesome! And then opposite side from the quarry!

From other reports I have heard, the double black diamant trail requires some committment and risk if you want to ride the jumps which are proper doubles with at least one that will send you quite high and a 6 -8ft rrock drop. I see a bit of a session there coming on. I'd like to be able to ride all the jumps and obstacles eventually and am feeling properly nervous about the prospect of trying this trail...

Ja. It's a proper Euro standard black trail with big gaps and some proper sized drops. You've got to really want it and the gaps are way beyond my testicular threshold.

As OmegaMan said, the rocks are part of the natural terrain features, and yes: I think in the middle of winter they could cause some admin slicked over, but at the moment they really are fantastic hard-surface trail portages.

There are ride-arounds for some of the truly mad bits, but yes: it's a proper thing, and note: if you have an off at the gnarly bit (right at the top) it won't be such a quick or easy evacuation.

Superbly built, very rideable.

Yup, what a trail-does exactly what it says on the box-getting advanced riders excited to try new things! I am particularly excited about trying that little hip/berm type jump thing after the 2 'big boy' jumps (as Rika refers to them).

Rode the trail on Friday and bumped into Julien Louw who showed me down the trail (will upload a rubbish video of it soon). The wind was gusting up there so the big boy jumps were ignored (as was the big rock drop) but those tight little berms were so much fun and got me thinking I have to refine my technique with them.

The top section is by far my favourite with those gulley type mini wall rides and little jumps, into the mahoooosive gaps and drops with a proper rock garden at the top. Time to buy some decent pads!

Oh and Dave Mercer rode down on his Mercer steel hardtail and was just a few seconds off our tails-though I can't imagine he had more fun than us!

I don't think anybody in the world makes a bigger momentum mismanagement-stall-trackstand mess of them at the moment than I do.

As a whole, all four levels of the new line (and I include the flowtrail, Slangpad, as the bottom bit), has something to challenge riders of all conceivable skill levels.

Great vid, thanks Daniel. At least these days you can check a trail out before you ride it.. Those berm/wall rides near the top look like huge fun. How do rate this compared to the WP DH trail at Jonkers?

Comparing the 2 I'd give the DH trail a 4/10 and the new trail a 9/10. Only cos I've ridden People in Chatel and the blue trail in Morgins which are both 10/10

That is a pretty decent vid for a single run. Notable bike skills, shows off the trail in an attractive manner too.

Ja. DAMN good trail. It's really hard to imagine how they could have built a better trail with what is on offer there.

I meant more from a difficulty level than fun. I loved the DH track - had a real extreme feel to it in places. Definitely sounds like the new one is even better though...

"I meant more from a difficulty level than fun. I loved the DH track - had a real extreme feel to it in places. Definitely sounds like the new one is even better though..." Headshot, the DH track had a big drop off to your right two-thirds in, but since they removed the trees it does not have much off-trail furniture to hit. This new trail, there are swift bit, and a surfeit of trees, so if you do come off, you'll impact something or other.

That said, it's really, really well built, and well worth the opportunity cost of having a, well, oopsie.

cannot wait to be in decent enough shape to ride these trails again

Please reserve judgement on the video-no quality at all but at least it's on the web ;)

How the heck do you embed a vimeo video??? Never been able to figure it out.

Here's the link

Awesome riding. Just another great example of how video's completely remove perspective of gnarliness. That rock drop at the end of the first level (after the Ace of Spades sign) is proper heavy. I was wondering how one would ride it without hucking it because it is a drop on a drop, but you just coasted it. Respect.
