Good day,

I'm brand new to the forum but would like an opinion please. I've been a recreational MTB rider for quite some years and recently upgraded to a Momsen AL829 29'er one month ago. I've barely done 150km on the bike and took it back to the local bike shop where I've bought it from for the first free service / check-up / tuning.

Next day got on the bike, cycled about 100m and BANG!

my derraileur hanger snapped. Can't remember what exactly happened but I think I shifted a gear at that time. It was a flat road with no rocks or anything else possible to damage it.

Who do I blame? The manufacturer? Bad hanger? Or the my bike shop who last worked on it. Do I have anything to fight for regarding warranty?

Thanks

Check the spokes on the drive side of the back wheel for damage. Sound to me like the RD top limit screw wasn't set properly and the derailleur went into the spokes.

Either that or a too-short chain or faulty hanger, in which case there would be no damage to the spokes.

Get another bike shop to have a look at it first and give you a diagnosis based on what you've said here - then if it's the last shop's fault, go back and get them to sort it out, or if it's a warranty issue take it back to where you bought it from.

Thanks for replies.

I also thought of the limit screw because one spoke on driver side is broken but the bike shop is very confident that they've set it up well and test drived it afterwards with no problem. So now I don't know if the hanger broke first and then went into the spokes since only one is broken? Would you not expect more to break if derraileur goes in first? Don't know? Will wait for the new year when Momsen re open and have a word with them first.

Thanks

in a way that's the whole point if the replaceable hanger, rather that than you frame snapping.......a bit unlucky I must admit.

Hangers don't typically just snap out of the blue riding on flat even land, especially not 100m on from the last service - actually that's a red flag, as in what did the lbs do to it?

There must be a reason, either faulty part, faulty installation/work done on it or some kind of rider induced damage, which would show some previous visual damage(scuff marks/scratches etc)
