Well done to all participants who joined us for the first Audax Sunday of the year! Fifteen entrants for the 200km, and thirteen for the 300km was a great turnout. Lots of new faces.

Join us for the next event on Sunday 23rd February at the Lido Hotel for a. 200 km (starts at. 6am) and a 400km (starts at 3am).

Check out the rebooted website www.audaxsa.co.za for further details. Not sure what Audax is? The website has lots of event reports, magazine articles and other background.

You guys are all mental.

I might have to try one...........

It starts like that - then you read someone's account of PBP, and before long you're looking at specs of Titanium frames and wondering whether that's what you need because 28mm tyres and mudguards won't fit on your bike. Before you know it you'll have a dynamo hub on order, and there will be no way back. You'll have caught the Rando Virus and it's for life.

Hit Unfollow above and stop reading now .... save yourself ...

Well done

I'm still working myself up for the 600 :whistling:

More 2015 updates starting to trickle through on the PBP page:

http://www.paris-bre...ueil&page=edito

Downloadable info brochure here, with registration and pre-registration dates:

http://www.paris-bre...rmation_general

As noted already the current SA SR series will act as pre-qualfiers. Looks like the 3 rides at the tail end of the year will fall within the period for qualifiers:

29-30 November Lido Hotel 600 & 200 03.00 & 06.00

7 December Randburg Sports Club 200 05.30

21 December Lido Hotel 400 & 100 04.00 & 06.00

For anyone wanting to get a jump-start to their campaign.

One question I had on that - does a 600 in March, followed by those 3 count as an SR for the year. It's missing a 300, but would one of the 600s count in it's place? Would be nice to get an SR along the way, but it's also tempting to get qualifiers in the bag as early as possible to allow time for 2nd attempts in case of mishap.

A 600 can stand in for any of the other distances. So in this case: 600+600+200+400=SR.

We are looking at running South Africa's first 1000km Audax event early next year possibly before the Argus. Do any of you Hubbers have an interest in such a ride?

Sounds like a great addition to the calendar. Still suffering some lingering neck issues from LEL, so going to have to see how the March 600 goes first I think - might need to limit myself to the Nov 600 for PBP qualifier if it's still not 100%.

My only comment would be whether post Argus might be better - anyone who rides the Argus for a fast time might not be fully recovered to be able to race properly if it's soon after a 1000.

Erm, okay. Looks like its only the two of us who have an interest. Will keep you informed.

Odd time of year this, I think most people are in race mode or Argus prep mode - might well find the interest in more varied events picks up later on.

I think Eddie suggested in an email how about the Argus being the first 100 of the 1000 and then we all ride on from there out to some scenic routes for the rest. I don't recall if he and I discussed that a while back by email, or maybe we just had the same thought because I remember chatting to my partner Yoli about that exact same idea. Probably many reasons that's not a workable idea, but nice concept - not even sure if the Argus bit would breach audax rules by having water tables and support along the route. If it could be made to work though, it might generate international audax interest - don't just come to SA to do an Argus, but do a 1,000km audax at the same time too - all for the price of the one flight.

I cannot see myself doing a fast argus ride and then doing another 900km afterwards. It takes too much out of me.

There is that too of course! This year's Argus is strictly a fun ride for me - too many distractions and too little speed work.

Edit: I guess it's a tough call fitting 1,000 in the calendar. Pre-xmas, people are doing or post DC, post Xmas a lot are in Argus mode, sometime post Argus is prob the best fit

Worrying incident near the Lido I just saw elsewhere on The Hub:

Don't know Jozy well, so no idea if this is near where you guys ride. Be careful if so! If you read down the thread, it was a pellet gun but still caused injury. Hard to make any real suggestions - riding in a group wouldn't prevent something like this, just maybe allow at least 1 rider to get a license plate down for the cops.

Longest I've done is 300km. Hope to do 400 or 600 this year. Will then decide if I can do 1,000. Don't want the mouth to write cheques that the legs can't cash :whistling:

Before LEL my longest was 265km. It was quite good fun crossing the Humber Bridge (around 300km) at dusk with a small group of Americans who were very experienced randonneurs. They nearly fell off their bikes when I said that was officially my first imperial double century and 35km longer than I'd ever ridden.

If you can do a 300, you have all the fitness you need to do a 1,000. The rest is all about preparation, pacing (which means knowing your pace not other peoples), and mental preparation. Think no further ahead than the next conrol, and you're never really riding anything longer than an Argus.

Edit: And when it really gets tough, forget the next control and just focus on the next fence-post. And when you reach it, the one after that.
