Hi Guys

Looking for some advice.

Im looking at a set of tubeless wheels, but am not sure do you need to have tubeless tyres or can you use standard tyres?

This is for a road bike

Thank you

You need tubeless tyres. Hutchinson make some but they are not cheap. I have also found tubeless wheels (ultegra) tough to get tyre off rim.

You would normally be able to run the wheels with standard tyres and tubes. But in general (may be exceptions) dont think standard tubes will be ready.

Also if you run tubeless be careful to research what sealant to use - there are some stories of corrosion from some sealants in road wheels.

I've been running tubeless for about a year now. Very happy with my decision.

Don't think about some hack conversion though, only do it if you're in the market for some new wheels.

What are the pros and cons to the tubeless system?

Less flats! I have Hutchinson on ZTR Alpha rims, works great when all in order, but when not, can cause stress. But that's the story of tubeless that we use in mtb (and high tech in general).

The tyres tend to loose pressure when the bike stands, the tyre beads need to be 'popped' again, can be a pain with a floor pump. Also need to use two layers of rim tape, due to higher pressures.
