Disc rotor shim/spacer

Yip, I ran out of adjustment on my caliper slots. I cant get the caliper far enough inboard towards the hub, so I figured I need to add a shim between the rotor and hub to move the rotor away from the hub a tiny bit.

an alternative is if you have an IS to Post calliper mount you could put a washer between the calliper spacer and the frame, if its post mount you will need to move the disc as you are trying to do.

just a thought as its guaranteed to be easier to go to builders and use a washer than try move the disc.

Have you just changed your braking setup (Replaced the existing brakes)?

Reason I ask is that I have just had a similar issue. I couldn't get enough adjustment on the caliper to centre it on the rotor. I ended up getting it machined to "gain" a few extra mill's of adjustment. Worked out fine.

Is the caliper hitting the adaptor at full adjustment?

I bought some small washers from Builder's Warehouse a while back when my old bike had the same "need". Worked fine. At like 20c per washer....

Ja I changed the setup, I got Shimano XT rotors which replaced the Avid HS1 rotors. Running the Shimano rotors with Elixir 5 Calipers (don't ask  ).

The rotor is not hitting the caliper, but I cant get it adjusted enough so that the rotor does not rub against the inside pad. I even tried pushing back the pads as far as they can go hoping they would align themselves, but that did not work either.

What did you get machined?

Cool beans! That was my next plan, but I was a bit worried about that, did the washers damage the rotor or the hub surface? Or did the rotor shift after heavy braking? If not, I think that's the route I will take if I cant find a proper shim.

First make sure that the rim is centered across the hub and the hub centred between the locknuts before adding any spacers/washers

Ah I see. If I can recall, I had a similar problem. My inside pad was rubbing. I needed to move the caliper in but couldn't shim the adaptor as it was too close to the rotor. I took the rotor to a machine shop and had them tak 2mm of the outside so that I could get an additional 2mm of adjustment on the caliper.

Worked out perfectly. When you do the caliper alignment, loosen the mounting screws that hold it in place, apply the brake to centre the caliper and with the brake on, tighten the mounting bolts. If that doesn't work, then there is something else causing misalignment.

Oohhhh ok makes sense now. Machining will be very last resort but thank you for the info.

You can always try to get hold of a sheet of 1mm shim stock, from an engineering supplies shop or proper hardware store.

It is made from brass, and you can make a stencil from your hub profile and transfer it to the shim stock and cut it out with a scissor. You can always layer the sheets as well.

Check if you have clearance between the adaptor and the rotor. If you do, then you can always add a washer between the adaptor and the frame to space it inwards.

Just a note on washers, if you are going to use them as shims, make sure you buy machine washers and not the cheaper punched items

Do they stock Machine washers at Builders? Or can I only get them from a machine or special tool shop?

Not sure about builders but most engineering fastener suppliers will have them.

Before you go that rout though, have a close look at the Builders washers. You are looking for washers that are flat and all the same thickness. The Builder's ones should be fine though. You'll see straight away if they are suitable as a shim or not.
