Being that I am really bad at this (cycling) and not a fan of getting spat out the back of the unseeded group  (as I tend to do) I have entered the 72km any chance anyone knows what the elevation gain is on that route?

Posted

My Edge800 registered 1192 meters from tour de ppa. With elevation correction it is 1278.

Im expecting more from this race.

I think ultimately the wind will determine the suffering though.

That is a loooong stretch back if the SE is pumping.

I re-plotted the route and now got 1280m Gain.

so is it ok to enter on the day?

Looks like it. Just get there early, I remember it being a bit of a bun fight last year. Why not enter online to save the hassle?

I plotted the route on Strava as best as I could and it seems like there will be 650m of elevation gain for the 72km route and about 1100m for the 126km route. I hoped there would be more than 750m climb on the 72km route as that would mean you won't have a 15% penalty added to your index seeding rating of the event - So I don't think I will be doing it and 126km is too longfor me haha.

Here is the strava lnk which I think the route is like for the 72km, I must be abit off because I get 70km.

From PPA website:

ROAD EVENTS

• 80km and over – no climbing requirement, no other penalty; or

• 750m of climbing, regardless of distance, no other penalty; or

• 60km with 15% penalty (added to your seeding index)– no climbing requirement; or

• 400m climbing with 15% penalty, no distance requirement

DJ, your route runs along Main road and not the Boulevard, where this usually runs. That will account for the odd k's lost. No serious elevation, just lekker rollers. Gooi hom...

For interest sake - I saw that they've (lo and behold...) closed down a lane in the Boulevard, right opposite the usual start/finish... for roadworks. Why they could not have left this for another week, I don't understand. Not as if that was any new damage that could not have waited. It will be the cyclists' fault that there's traffic issues and hold-ups on Sunday, of course... :whistling:

Thanks, I was also concerned about the penalty... c'est la vie...

Well theory is that you should ride an amazing fast time on the short distance and the 15% penalty should only bring your result on par with what you would have ridden on the longer distance. So no need to stress about it :whistling:

bit annoying about the extra 120 rand for the chip.. what am i supposed to do with it afterwards?

I hear ya but it does work out to be less than £7 and I'm sure you can sell it on if you want to. Do you actually need a chip?

Posted

looks like it. i don't mind paying for it but it seems rather a big expense for one race.. if you need the chip they should just make the entry fee more to include it. wouldn't seem so bad that way somehow :)

Unless you also bought yourself a PPA membership you just bought yourself a useless little orange decoration for your bike because non-members don't get timed...
