Karakoram Posted January 27, 2014 Share Hiya RobBarker. I've also been Googling 'bicycle maintenance courses' in SA and not much has turned up. It seems like an opportunity in the making. In the UK there are quite a few accredited courses about. There are courses for technical maintenance, wheel building, bike assembly, maintenance management for bicycle fleets, cycle tour / mtb leader courses which includes trail maintenance and setup. On successful completion of the courses, recognised certificates or diplomas are issued to the candidates. It leaves me wondering how the local bike shop maintenance technicians obtain their qualification to work on bikes. As bikes become more expensive and sophisticated, surely a formal certification would be a prerequisite to work on them and to uphold the warranty? I am interested in a shock absorber maintenance and tuning course. A lot of YouTube movies are available, but it is difficult to decide which contains good practice or just somebody posting a way of doing something. The Big Bad Norm Posted January 27, 2014 Share Thx Karakoram, I agree with you, how do the guys in the shops get their training, assume it is by learning in a shop as an aprentice etc. Hopefully someone will catch on that there is a demand for this, although perhaps the LBS wont like it as we will all start fixing our own bikes.........or maybe Im wrong and most people are happy to fork out R350/R450 for a service and clean. RichieT Posted January 27, 2014 Share Yeah, a great shame about Yellow Saddle...I have accumulated about 10gigs worth of U Tube video tutorials as well as text tutorials covering most aspects of bike maintenance which, when properly sorted/filed I was thinking of making available on Dropbox or similar.But in any event, I recommend just googling any issue you have and spending 10 minutes to half an hour sifting thru the results. And that's without fork and shock servicing or any replacement parts. I was amazed to learn that my bike's Reba shocks actually require a service after 80 hours of use or about once a year.
