The small jump under Emmarentia Dam was also destroyed and that wasn't even built it was just some soil that had been dumped years ago that some guys decided to ride and has since become a jump.

I'm not sure about that one, it's possible it could have been city parks flattening the bump to make it easier for the tractor mowers. The Jan Smuts one was very deliberate, though.

It's happened at that jump a few times, oddly enough, which made some riders suggest it could be another rider on a safety crusade but I'd hate to think a mountain biker would do something like that. All efforts to involve city council have been fruitless. A number of people have tried, including myself and it's a brick wall of vague responses, missed meetings and eventually non-replies.

i disagree on the safety parade comment, if that was the case they would have removed from the jump side not the landing side, what these ****** dont seem to understand is without the landing most riders are going to get seriously hurt, it takes great skill and a sufficient amount of speed to execute a landing 3-5 odd feet longer than was initially planned.

i had an experience in Emmarentia on the gap jump that goes over the stream where i launched and only realised mid air the lip and landing had been destroyed, i landed mid gap and endo'ed badly into the bank, was very lucky my speed carried me in a roll to safetly but if i had hit head first i am sure i would have broken my neck.

what makes it worse is the material making up the lip and landing was laying in the stream hence it was destroyed not for anything other than hurting someone!!!

I also think whoever is doing this is being a prime candidate for DoesDom, but may I ask a question? Don't you ever walk an obstacle before jumping it? I come from a Jeeping abckground and walking obstacles, especially one I KNEW WELL, has saved my bacon a few times, as things change. Rain, people, machinery etc.

I pretty much always walk new obstacles, but once you've ridden them a couple times and they become apart of your normal route, you kind of just expect them to be as they were after the last time you rode them (I do tend to check some out after major rains).

The Jan Smuts one in particular is pretty dangerous though as the landing is blind so if you haven't checked it our you'll only know once you're airborne, like Rata did.

Although, that landing doubled as a launch for riders stepping up. So maybe the culprit was on a safety parade from that angle. I have seen riders slam on brakes the last second as they follow me in to the step-up and suddenly realize there's a gap.
