ZTR Stans Hub Bearing failure

I have a set of these wheels, after 1200km I replaced the bearings in the rear wheel as they where rolling rough, about 100km with the new bears the rear free body side fails completely.

I do think the balls are to small and a few compromises have been made to save weight, anyone had similar issues.

How long should they last, I must add I weigh 96kg so this could contribute.

The rear wheel has 4 bearings in total, the 2 which you replaced and another two in the FWB. If the hub bearings were finished, there is a 99.9% chance that the FWB bearings were in need of replacing too. (Play on the cassette is a sign that the bearings need replacing.)

Now when you say fail, what do mean exactly? The bearings collapsed or the pawls no longer engage?

Maybe its just me but how can you install a bearing incorrectly?

Only thing I can think of is not seating it properly in which case it would not fit together again anyway.

Anything else?

Not fittin it correctly then forcing it when it doesn't fit together properly. Or forcing it just too tight, or that last 0.1mm where it's fitted incorrectly etc etc. So many variations of the same thing.

I think I got it perfectly.

on the drive side it sits flush, no lips. on the non drive side it is deep seated maybe 0.5mm seating into the hub housing.

anyway I have double checked and it looks perfect.

The freehub bearings look fine and feel smooth, no play at all, I did buy a spare set just in case.

I will monitor, just a reminder of how important it is to check your kit all the time.

There are a few ways. Pressing in by the inner race (wrong size mandrel), seating skew, not seating all the way in, damaging the seal...

Not having seen the bearing I won't put my head (?) on a block, but I'm going to guess at a slight angular misalignment, possibly caused by dirt in the race journal or on the bearing. Not much that will kill a bearing quite as fast.

Edit: Wrong word...

I agree, and no more tapping for me, just bought part for R28.50 to make a bearing press.

Perhaps it's just the angle of the pic, but your bearing press appears to be applying force to the inner race, which is not ideal.

Personally I tend to use a socket that matches the outside diameter of the bearing I'm trying to press into place.
