HomerSimpson Posted September 5, 2006 Share Well, sanity prevailed and I decided not to ride because of flu etc..so I took my son's little digital camera (my own is travelling in Europe at the moment) and headed up Papegaaiberg, saw a medic near a drop-off and decided to hang around... and sure enough, this bloke came hurtling down the slope....http://static.flickr.com/87/234743749_2ef0a3e0a2.jpg and he did not quite make it...did not get the picture, ws too busy avoiding the flying bicycle... but here is the evidence.... http://static.flickr.com/81/234743750_6e72dc3a8f.jpg more later... HomerSimpson Posted September 5, 2006 Share Some guys (amongst the first few 40km riders) knew how to ride the dropoff....http://static.flickr.com/87/234790755_46a5e4bcd6.jpg http://static.flickr.com/97/234790754_6450ba0c35.jpg
HomerSimpson Posted September 5, 2006 Share And there was also a granny run, which some people managed to get onto...http://static.flickr.com/80/234790761_7cc899680f.jpg and some people did not quite.... http://static.flickr.com/93/234790758_e2dabc4c4d.jpg

Dicky DQ Posted September 5, 2006 Share And to think this was on of the easier sections of the course. This was by far the most technical PPA MTB ride I have ever done. sections of the course were reminicent of XC lap racing. super fun. I also lernt another valuable lesson, don't ever ride with a hangover. it tackes the edge off and you often miss the correct lines. not fun at all. Groot Lem Posted September 5, 2006 Share The GT rider is Arno Viljoen, did it in about 1h45 or 50!! Cruising onn his own in front. My race ended after 30 min with broken pedal. Lucky, as Dick was on my tail
smallrebel Posted September 6, 2006 Share The first photo from HomerSimpson second posting is of Johan Reyneke. He won a gold on the World Champs (Death Cyclest).
Velouria Posted September 6, 2006 Share http://static.flickr.com/87/234790755_46a5e4bcd6.jpg Looks like Johan Reyneke - our star MTBer at the Deaf World Champs (and a club mate of WW). PPA says he came fourth.
Dicky DQ Posted September 6, 2006 Share That drop off looks so much easier from this angle, but this is through rested sober eyes now.

PPA says he came fourth. Well spotted Velouria. Yes that my boy! Johan worked REALLY REALLY hard on his mtb skills before the Deaf world champs, and his downhill capabilities, certainly helped him secure the mtb world title, plus plenty of remarks from fellow deaf riders about his downhill skills. Lucky, as Dick was on my tail[/quote'] Yes Arno came cruising past way ahead of any of the other 40km riders...has quite an interesting little moment at the drop-off when he did a little front-wheel one-wheeler across the road! His comment was "almost took a little tumble there!" I found a photo where he is just coming into the frame (gave him a little too much of a "lead-out"); will post it shortly.
